Why Maui? If your looking for chill, may want to look at Kauai instead.
Loved the Marriott Wailea! It's in a sunny part of the island and a beautiful resort for families with a great pool. It has a nice spa in case you want to treat your wife while you take your kids to the pool ;)
There's a shopping mall nearby with other restaurants and it's a straightforward drive to the Maui Science Center if your kids want to go there!
We are planning to rent a car so that we can explore.
We did Kauai last year as a combined baby moon and birthday trip, so want to visit a different one.
How’s the beach access from the Sheraton?
Lol it *can* be a scary drive, especially for folks that get nervous on curvy roads, sketchy guardrails, etc. But I'm pretty sure that driving during a hurricane is the bigger factor!
If you do it (we've done it as a family 2 or 3 times), and you're worried about the actual driving part:
1) Take your time. You can drive your own pace. Just be courteous and and pull over when possible to allow faster drivers to pass.
2) Make sure you start the return trip early. If you don't like the drive in the daytime, you aren't going to be happy driving it at night.
I’ve stayed at the Marriott Beach Resort two years in a row. Absolutely loved this property. They just finished a $100M renovation on this property a couple years back. I love Wailea, although yes the beach is about a 3 minute walk from the property down the path. Property itself is really beautiful and kid-friendly but isn’t overrun by kids if you know what I mean. I have a 9/7 yo and it’s great. They have a kids area with 4 water slides, an adult pool and an infinity pool. They have nightly movies in the movie room and a game room.
Also stayed at the Westin Kaanapali in the time share. Time share was one of the nicest time shares I’ve stayed at but the amenities on property (shared with the Westin) just not as nice. Although it does have the popular shaved ice place on property.
Would stay away from the Sheraton. Heard it’s run down
Marriott infinity pool is really nice with a view of ocean, but not really any beach, to get beach you walk next door to Grand Wailea which has a public beach.
If you have a car: sunrise at Haleakala, black sand beach, snorkel near Lahaina. It’s an island so wherever you are, you will pretty much find a beach
Sheraton is right on the nicest stretch of Ka'anapali. Have had good luck with Platinum benefits. Proximity to Lahaina is a plus.
Never stayed in Wailea so I can't compare directly.
Thanks so much for the responses! I really appreciate the collective advice!
I stayed at the Marriott in Wailea, don’t remember it having a beach. Nice hotel though
Also, just got back from a two day Maui trip like 4 hours ago. DO NOT drive on the Road to Hana or any curvy cliff road on Maui. No one told us how dangerous they are so we drove about 5 miles through before getting so scared and turning around. I might add that it was also during the hurricane BUT STILL scariest 2 hours of my life.
We went a few months ago for a week & decided not to stay in one place the whole time...the west side of the island is very touristy...feels like any Caribbean large all inclusive resort...doesn’t actually feel like Hawaii. We stayed 3 nights at the Westin ka’anapali (highly recommend - awesome hotel, delicious breakfast, etc). Then we stayed 2 nights near the volcano, in a kush jungle b&b called Banyan in Makawao (drove to the volcano top one day), and then drove the road to Hana, stayed one night there, and drove back the next day. EY1 is silly. Road to Hana was beautiful & not dangerous. You have to go slow & don’t be stupid/aggressive & you’ll be fine. There are amazing waterfalls, lagoons, hiking trails, beaches all along & it’s well worth the drive. Recommend downloading the gypsy road to hana app bc it works offline & uses gps to detect where you are & gives you briefing of the story behind each sight. Also recommend staying in Hana bc it would suck if you had to rush it.
Also, check out Ho’Okipa beach park at sunset or just after...on the easternmost part of the beach, GIANT turtles come in from the sea to sleep...it’s really incredible.
We've stayed in the Sheraton and Westin (timeshare, not Nanea). We've visited family staying in the Westin hotel.
The Sheraton is definitely shows it age. But for us, it's kind of part of the vintage charm. I wouldn't say it's rundown. I'd say the differences between the properties are pretty consistent with differences between the brands in general.
