Best travel steamer for someone who can’t iron?!
Recommend staying in Cusco for ~2 days before heading to Machu Picchu to acclimate. Also a more fun city than Lima IMO
Lima is a huge spread out city (10m) but Miraflores is an incredibly nice and ex-pat neighborhood that reminds me of Miami. Cuzco is less metro and more what I expect a city in Peru would look like. More lively, but give yourself at least 2 days to get adjusted to the altitude because it is high at 11,000 ft. You’ll want to be careful around the Machu Picchu area around December because it’s rainy season and if you want to do a lot of hiking (MP mountain or Inca trail) you might get rained out. There’s lots to see in Cusco and nearby Ollantaytambo in terms of Incan history. Can’t speak so much about the nightlife but the food is amazing :) ceviche, roast chicken, so many sauces. Try the ChiFa!
I just got back from Peru with 3 friends. We had an amazing time. We had a very packed schedule, but only the Inca Trail Trek + Machu Picchu and the Day 9 tour below were pre-planned. Everything else we decided on while there, and used Trip Advisor to find restaurants and excursions
Day 1: Stayed in Lima overnight on day 1 bc of a cancelled flight from Lima to Cusco. Went to a great restaurant called Panchita - highly recommend. We also attempted to get a reservation at Central (They are currently booked out until September, but you should try! Rated 5th best restaurant in the world in 2017)
Day 2: Flew to Cusco early, checked in to our AirBnB and explored Cusco.
Day 3: Impromptu overnight trip to Urubamba in the Sacred Valley
Day 4: Half day horseback riding down Urubamba River / taxi back to Cusco after (we set this up with the taxi who drove us to Urubamba, gave us his card and we messaged him on WhatsApp)
Day 5: ATV rides in Sacred Valley to Salt Mines and Moray archeological site.
Day 6: Check-out of AirBnB / 4am pickup 😱 to train to start of Inca trail trek. Day 1 of Inca Trail Trek, arriving at Machu Picchu at sunset through the Sun Gate. Camped that evening.
Day 7: Toured Machu Picchu with our tour guide. Day 2 trek to top of Machu Picchu Mountain. Returned to Lima that evening by Train/Bus
Day 8: Flew back to Lima / Rest Day
Day 9: Full day tour of Ballesta Islands (mini Galápagos Islands) + Dune Buggy Rides + Sand Surfing + Pisco Wine Tasting
Day 10: Flew home
The views were incredible. You’ll love the trip!
⛰
I recommend doing one of the Inca trail Treks groups with extra activities like mt biking, rafting and zip lining.
Places to visit, stay, security, resources to consult etc etc. I and wife planning but may take the 2 grown boys also if they behave. I know pretty open question - but can certainly benefit from any advice as in initial stages of planning
Thanks a ton guys. Appreciated !
Btw any insights into expenses. How does a trip to Peru compare to a trip to a European country say Italy? Assuming traveler maintains similar standard of living - lodging, restaurants etc
