Just had our first baby in September. At PwC if you’re covering yourself and family, the total cost of the high deductible plan is the lowest in all scenarios.
It only makes sense if you don’t have enough cash on hand to meet the high deductible ($7k at PwC). In other words, you may need to opt for the low deductible plan in order to budget your cash flow.
New mom here. Assuming you get pregnant and give birth in 2020, I personally think the lower deductible is best. By the time you give birth, depending on what your deductible is, it’ll likely get eaten up by all the docs appointments, tests, ultrasounds (more if you’re older or high risk). If you and your partner struggle to conceive, well then there are a ton more appointments and procedures you potentially have to go through on top of the “normal” stuff. By the time I had my little one, my out of pocket bill from the hospital was like $200 (total bill was $55,000). The last thing you want after just having a baby and all the unexpected costs that come with them is a high bill from insurance. Just my .02 though. Good luck!
Thanks CD1, is this after you met all deductibles- the $200 out of pocket?
I’m in the same boat. Assuming you are a dude, check your wife’s insurance too. She is probably going to need it a lot more than you. I’m staying on the HSA, she’s going to the low deductible plan. We’ll stick the kid on hers if it happens.
I’m curious as well. I’m currently enrolled in a PPO plan. Should I switch?
