Anyway OP, I recommend looking in Brooklyn and Queens for somewhat better deals and a better community vibe. Check out Long Island city, Astoria, greenpoint, Bushwick, Williamsburg, and crown heights. All are relatively easy commutes to Manhattan (and JFK/LGA incidentally, given your job). Most have a mix of 4 story walk ups and newer doorman/elevator high rises if that’s your thing.
Btw: not sure about your background or comfort with NYC, but don’t let spray paint, barbed wire, or mountains of garbage give you the wrong impression lol. While situational awareness is recommended wherever you go, these are all pretty great places to live.
