Do you have something else lined up? I don't know if now is the best time to rock the boat.
You're probably better off just jumping ship.
No paid opportunity lined up, but I’m quickly discovering that the work I’m doing is no longer aligned to my interests or my professional goals. With that in mind, there are more meaningful things I could do with my time than spending 60+ hours a week doing work that neither interests nor challenges me. I already work for a volunteer organization on the side, and I could pretty easily transition to doing that full time or pick up a paid gig in the same field.
Hear you on this not being the best time to rock the boat... but the pandemic is also precisely what’s driven me to shake things up!
Been there, done that. You likely won’t like their answers. Be prepared to sit back and continue doing what you’re doing or leave.
Oh absolutely, that said, from my experience, you won’t be moved now or in the future. Management doesn’t care from where or how the money comes and they are willing to sacrifice entry level employees for the good of the bottom line.
Maybe don’t use any of that phrasing you just used.
Are you currently a high performer?
If yes, they’ll usually work to try and make you happy. But no one gives up talent they don’t want to lose.
Open to new challenges, hoping to stay on current project...
Are there other projects in the pipeline? If not, stay put.
Otherwise, you need to define your goals. Are they skills based? Do you want to lead to show management ability? Have you been engaged in business development or sales? Having a goal of getting promoted to earn more isn’t a good look. And don’t say about your time being well spent. You’re chargeable, that’s well paid for. You feel that you have more to offer or room to develop and increase your value to the firm.
What does the bench look like for the work that is aligned to your interests? We have a strong pipeline for my interests but our bench was always preferred to staffing a resource that doesn’t “align”.
Your opportunity now sounds like Staff Aug / Support to me...is that accurate?
Question for the multiple people saying “you won’t like their answers,” what specifically do you expect their answers to be?
Can I still be Garth?
