So have extra funds withheld with your employer towards year end to juice up your return and then move the return into I Bonds?
Coach
Bought mine in December 2021 and today!
Is there a link or website we can purchase the bonds?
https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds/res_ibonds.htm
I’ve made an account on Treasury Direct and am ready to purchase but the site looks kind of sketchy since it’s so poorly designed. After googling reviews of it I see some horror stories, how has your experience been? Is it easy to redeem the money later?
The site is archaic but it's fine. It's backed by the US government so I wouldn't be worried. Ibonds have been around for decades.
If you buy in april you get 7% for 6months then 9% for the following 6months so you average 8% for the year
Yup, that makes sense and what I’m planning for.
Why wouldn’t you just wait to buy in may to get the 9%?
If you plan to buy them, you should buy this month.
If you buy now: 7.12% for 6 months and 9%~ for 6 months
If you buy in May and after: 9%~ for 6 months and ??? for 6 months
The fed is going to raise interest rates to try and combat inflation. In 6 months that unknown rate is likely lower than 7%. If it isn't, we'll probably enter hyperinflation and/or stagflation and have bigger problems than the ibond rate.
