Hi OP, I really feel you on this. I'm born in Europe, but my entire extended family is in Wuhan.

As an engineer, my uncle was actually involved in building one of the temporary hospitals while everyone else was in quarantine (fortunately he is ok).

In a weird way, I actually find it easier to cope with it by making jokes and minimising the issue (à la "it's not a big deal").

But I've also been a target of aggressive racist comments on the street. Also I once sneezed (from dust), and a lady literally left the café with the comment of "we have to go, people now coughing in public!"

Anyways - this is a bit rambly, but just wanted to say I feel you on this. Really sorry to hear about your relative being affected. We'll get through this together.

like

People who haven't experienced racism doesn't understand that it's not always blatant acts of violence or loud name-calling (using the N word, etc). @BCG7 I don't think you're being a victim at all.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family OP, as well as any other folks who’ve been affected by this tragedy. I hope if you have anyone in quarantine or ill in your family, that they recover quickly. I hope people around you take note & are are more respectful (at least around you).

I know too much how small words thrown about in fun can hurt longer than intended. Humor can be a coping mechanism, but never when it is at the expense of the victims.

As a Chinese American here, if you crack a joke I’m coughing on yo ass

I need you on my project

I am from Wuhan. It is a beautiful dynamic city (think something like Chicago), and we have lost 2000 lives since January.

Thank you BCG1. This is a complex time for me for sure and thank you for making me laugh. I actually shared this with a few English speaking friends in Wuhan; hope it will bring some joy when they wake up :)

RT! I am a Chinese American, and people keep making racist comments towards me about the corona virus at work. My family is in quarantine, and I don’t think these jokes are funny at all

People say that at work? That’s terrible

My son (who is half Asian but doesn’t look it) told me that Asian kids at his school are bullied and teased about the corona virus. It is hard for adults so imagine the poor kids. (Humblebrag warning) I asked my son how he reacts in these situations and it made me so proud to know that he stands up to these kids.

You raised a good kid

I’m sorry but this is ridiculous. Setting aside racism / stereotyping / prejudice which is clearly awful - humor is a coping device!

Every grabbed beers after a shift with doctors / nurses / emts / med techs? Ya lots of dark humor - doesn’t mean they are not empathetic. If something bothers you personally then just saying something and if people don’t stop - well then they are being a dick.

But otherwise - can we chill. Who here knows someone who died or suffers from heart problems or cancer? I’m guessing everyone since they are the top 2 killers in the western world. So does that mean I can’t make a joke that my arteries are producing SlimJims the hard way?

Humor exists because of difficult topics

like

Hahaha D2 let me unwind from work by arguing with people on FB in peace!!!!

Seriously!? No jokes about corona virus full stop? Great - next people are going to say I have to stop making jokes about 9/11...

likefunny

If you make another joke about 9/11, they’d Never Forget it.

funny

Can we continue making jokes about mexican beer about it tho?

likefunny

No mames cabrón. ;)

Honestly I’ve cracked jokes about it with my team and given zero thought to the country of origin. I think there’s just a lot of memes circulating and wouldn’t have even thought about my audience. If anyone had actually contracted it I would have nothing but sympathies - I think it’s just a timely topic therefore easy to make commentary on

like

BCG4 - right, that’s why you d want to be “sensitive”, which means putting a tad more thought in your audience, not blanket assuming anything, given how special the time is

Is there anything more unfunny than cracking jokes about people suffering, losing their lives and their loved ones? Not just around Chinese colleagues. It’s just not funny, at all.

likefunny

A4 Tell us a coronavirus joke then :)

Is it wrong to be fake coughing near people wearing masks at airports or...?

funny

Principal designer - in case that made you nervous, I actually don’t do that. My apologies.

And yes I do hope my coworkers can be a tad more sympathetic and do a tad bit more work to understand their audience, to avoid joking at e.g. somebody grieving (myself) or have family members under quarantine (Accenture 1)

I hope that’s not a lot to ask.

Not justifying racist jokes or actions that discriminate against Asian people, but something to keep in mind: people are scared to death and humor has always been a way to deal with fear and the unknown. Let’s give ourselves a bit of a break.

As an Asian American, I’ve definitely made jokes with friends about it. At the same time, I think it’s messed up if randos just assume I had it

It’s communism’s fault not China’s, making jokes is a bad look, but the blame does lie with the Chinese government.

I’m Chinese American, and I’ve been joking about it on my team all week. I can see why some people wouldn’t want to be put on the spot for it, though. Know your audience.

like

It isn’t offensive at all if you aren’t being accusatory or implying that Chinese people caused this. Dark humor is quite effective in times of extreme hardship.

About 10 days ago I was exposed to someone who later tested positive for covid. I’m super careful normally. I got a rapid test 7 days after exposure and a PCR test 8 days after exposure and they both came back negative. Since about day 5 after exposure I’ve been SUPER tired though. I’ll drink a ton of coffee, way more than normal, and still feel exhausted. Then off and on I’ve been having stomach issues. Have any of you had this happen? I feel like I have to have it but the tests say no. 🤷🏻‍♂️
