Hi OP, I really feel you on this. I'm born in Europe, but my entire extended family is in Wuhan.
As an engineer, my uncle was actually involved in building one of the temporary hospitals while everyone else was in quarantine (fortunately he is ok).
In a weird way, I actually find it easier to cope with it by making jokes and minimising the issue (à la "it's not a big deal").
But I've also been a target of aggressive racist comments on the street. Also I once sneezed (from dust), and a lady literally left the café with the comment of "we have to go, people now coughing in public!"
Anyways - this is a bit rambly, but just wanted to say I feel you on this. Really sorry to hear about your relative being affected. We'll get through this together.
People who haven't experienced racism doesn't understand that it's not always blatant acts of violence or loud name-calling (using the N word, etc). @BCG7 I don't think you're being a victim at all.
My son (who is half Asian but doesn’t look it) told me that Asian kids at his school are bullied and teased about the corona virus. It is hard for adults so imagine the poor kids. (Humblebrag warning) I asked my son how he reacts in these situations and it made me so proud to know that he stands up to these kids.
You raised a good kid
I feel for you, OP. It’s really not ok.
Do you guys cover your mouth when you cough? I know for one that when you’re sick you put a mask on and that’s really respectful. How has the disease spread that quickly?
All of the above, plus the fact that there is a 10-14 day incumbent period where a patient is actively spreading the disease without any symptoms. Some cases — including a friend of mine — was tested as positive, but has never shown any symptoms.
Serious question: isn’t this less deadly than the seasonal flu? A US colleague gave their condolences to a Chinese colleague and the Chinese colleague started laughing - “please, this really isn’t that bad. It’s just a virus.”
But I do understand their optimism. China is a big country; most other places are business as usual.
Ah yes, the number of people who washed their hands after greeting me even though I have never been to China in my life nor am I sick or coughing or sneezing.
😴😴😴😴
Might get banned for this one
This is actually hilarious
So far I haven’t heard anyone joked to me about this, if they are, I’m ready to “fight” back.
