I could not motivate myself, therefore I took a summer leave and changed a job to a similar one. If I am still unhappy after 1 year, I’ll start looking for a job in industry or thinking about ideas for a start up. I already have an idea for a passive income and am working on its realization.

like

1. Rental income

Still waiting when real estate prices decrease more and then will buy a one bedroom apartment in a historical center of a capital of a developing country. Then I’ll ask a management company to rent it and manage it.

2. Stock

Buying stock now on the bottom and will sell it on the top

3. Land

I purchased land in a developing suburb of a big city in a country without property tax and will sell the land in 10 years, for profit.

4. Start up

Looking for a startup where I can invest some $$$. This can be risky though.

I enjoy a roof over my head, food on my table and health insurance. Those help a lot with “motivation”.

I feel like that even makes me not to work. For the amount of OT hour and effort they require from me and I’m living paycheck to paycheck makes me not to give an F😩

Take your PTO - all of it, every year. Unplug completely and recharge. Remember that there will be highs and lows in any job. Staff years are the most boring. It gets interesting when you make manager.

like

Remember that the only thing that creates value for you is your knowledge at the end of the day. The more you know the more valuable you are. At least this is the lie I tell myself for constantly working insane hours in hopes that I can become a technical guru

Take a vacation! I get burnt out at least once a year. Usually after a week off I enjoy going to work again... obviously not for the first day or two when you have 100s of unread emails and want to still be sipping on a cold drink somewhere hot. If a vacation doesn’t help look into other career paths or go back to school.

I feel ya. People go through hardship all the time and throughout their lives. We are reading Little House on the Prairie and they have experienced fire, locusts, malaria, scarlet fever, snowpacked town for months without coal or food, blindness, and they are always in extreme poverty; they always say there’s no big loss without some gain. The public accounting crew who started a decade ago were gripped by the recession. Try to find something that intrinsically motivates you as you move through this hardship. Try to find something to be grateful for. It’s a life lesson if you can learn to keep going through this. It’s not easy. Hardships do not go away; we hopefully get more resilient at handling them.

Thank you ☺️

What year on you? I felt very similarly as an associate but with every promo I have felt more rewarded at my job. I think it’s because I have a better appreciation for what we actually do and can see the impact of my work more clearly. I definitely didn’t really like my job until I was a third year senior but now I’m a senior manager and it’s so much better. Is there anyone you work with who seems to enjoy their job? If so talk to them to get more perspective on what motivates them. This can be a super challenging environment and misery so often loves company. Definitely try to put boundaries on work and life so you unplug and truly separate yourself from work. There are a lot of opportunities here I’d hate for you to miss out on.

Think others have hit on it. Changing scope of work either by changing jobs, changing duties in your job, etc.

Setting better limits on time and personal vs work makes a bigger difference to me than I'd thought for my motivation. working from home makes that harder to separate out but on days where I wake up, do my morning routine, THEN open outlook I do better.

Same since I started blocking out a midday break and use it to leave the apartment (walk pup, grab groceries, step away). Ditto end of day. all about marking the time off, making it feel different. At the start of all this I'd toodle on the internet before and after work, not set a lunchtime break... it'd all blur together and blehhhhh.

If that's too much of just a bandaid, bigger change can work. if you have a mentor to talk to, swing it by them from a not complainy place. For that convo or just yourself, try to identify what about your job you DO like, that does feel meaningful. Then work toward doing more of that, even if baby steps.

Volunteering and mentoring is big for me. Having the means and stability to do stuff outside work helps. I have to be conscious of that.

But when I let it slip or start to flag, helps to go back to things above.

Get involved in other things within the firm: recruiting, technology, proposals etc. makes the job more fun than just audit/tax all day

I had similar struggles and now jumping ship 😉

I'm currently in discussion with an Indian startup who I think have a rather strange variable pay structure.

50% variable pay is in cash, paid in four equal semi-annual instalments. The remainder is in the form of ESOPs which vest equally over three years from the date of grant.

So far so good, but for calculating number of shares to be granted, they don't use the value of share on grant date, but use projected share value three years from that day. Is this common? Or are they being tacky?
