Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service
How many of you want kids?

Oh boy, just show up, pay attention and take notes. Be eager to take on work. That’s honestly all I expect for like the first 6 months
When they run out of work and say nothing
When you ask them about a task and they say they couldn't complete because of xyz but said nothing
When they make simple mistakes, not referring back to their notes or are not applying critical thinking. I should also note that I don’t mind staff coming to me if something doesn’t make sense, but it would be helpful if they explain their logic so I can see they’re thinking through the problem and making a genuine attempt.
When you turn in work to be reviewed, tell the reviewer if there was something you were unsure about. It’s not school where some people try to sneak a subpar product by a professor, we have to deliver A+ work to clients so help your team succeed. Your reviewers will appreciate it!
Be ready to ask questions. I appreciate my staff who work under me and continue wanting to learn and develop. I’d rather my staff ask the question and teach them how some thing should be completed versus me opening the workpaper and it’s incomplete or wrong.
Second, be a GREAT communicator. If your in charge is balancing several jobs, communicate your status and where things are at and be honest. Recently had a staff tell me they completed a bunch of work. Then I proceeded to open the workpapers and review them and nothing was complete or I was misguided by the staff. Transparency and great communication skills is always a good trait to have.
Third, don’t sweat or stress yourself out too much. You are still young in your career! Be a sponge learn as much as you can and work hard!
Also, nothing to against new people, we all have been there once or many times. I just simply provide input, might benefit one.
Take detailed notes.
If you don't know how to do something, spend 10-15 minutes trying to figure it out, and then ask your buddy, Senior or supervisor. It's better to ask how yo do something than spending hours spinning your wheels or doing it wrong.
Check in your engagement binder and all workpapers AND SYNCHRONIZE IT every night before you log off.
Be proactive in providing status updates to your Seniors and Managers. Ask them their preferred method and intervals for check-ins.
Always have the PY binder open to refer to. You shouldn't necessarily just be doing "SALY" but you can def learn from it.
Always 2x check references.
Always add references, if they're missing, and think about how you can improve documentation.
If you're scheduled for a job, but are getting pulled it or requests to do other tasks, tell the Senior or Manager of the scheduled job BEFORE you do anything else. Don't just bail without talking to them first.
Understand what you’re being asked to do. Understand why you’re doing it. If you don’t understand, ask. Not in a challenging way, but to learn. If you don’t learn why now, you may never understand why.
Making the same mistakes. Not understanding your role (I.e. you’re a a preparer so don’t make your manager or seniors do it). Not speaking up when you need more guidance.
Having the intellectual curiosity and drive to improve merely by asking this question.
Rising Star
As long as you are willing to try and show initiative to learn and help out, that’s all we ask for really.
Honestly the fact that you are thinking this ahead of time and to prep yourself already showed your initiative.
Some of the associates I’ve seen I honestly don’t know why they are even here, they seem to have zero interest in what we do and not willing to put any work in…smh
