Let me make some wild guesses: - you are an experienced EM or AP at McK now - A is you staying around to make partner, and 800k TC is the expected initial comp - B is another consulting firm that you just got an offer from. Focus on an area you are passionate about but the comp is below McK (with no guarantee of the partnership admission) OR a lucrative start-up offer with attractive equity - C is a director of strategy at a pharma / tech firm How did i do?

DINK - Dual Income No Kids

like

Op, you have spouse or significant other that has an income also? That would affect my decision. 350k HHI in a HCOLish area absolutely is enough (as others have point out, most do it for much less!) but it feels more upper middle class than anything. Can own a modest home, save for retirement, pay for kids’ college, all that stuff… just probably shouldn’t be driving 80k cars and spending 40k on vacations. If you’re ok with that lifestyle and value free time to enjoy some life, I’d still go with C. If you have a spouse making decent money too then, I frankly don’t see any reasonable argument for A or B.

Vote for a here

likefunny

People choosing C don’t live in NYC/SF

likefunny

If I could get C, but live in LA or OC instead of SF or NYC, I would consider that winning at life. Is anyone offering a job fitting that criteria? If so, my DMs are open

Who would vote anything but c except for workaholics/alcoholics

likefunny

Yeah, a lot of people work a/b hours for a lot less than c

like

A for 1 year, B for a few years after, and then ride C to retirement

likesmart

Hard to stop after getting that A money

likesmart

300-350k would be an ideal balance between making enough money (quite a bit more than the average citizen) to ensure financial stability (barring personal missteps), and truly enjoying the life (of which we have one, and only one. Unless you believe in rebirth).

likefunny

Interesting, so where do new souls come from given historic population increases ?

funny

Gonna go with A and call others picking B or C weak! 🧐

No friends and no soul..makes sense haha

I would do the 800k job for 2 years and then go back to a better work life job, get married have kids; remwber it’s always easy to go back from a high performing consulting role into industry other way round not possible…also for what it’s worth it will reflect very well across the rest of your career

Option C is an absolute blessing and would be one of the best jobs in America to anyone outside this hyper specific bubble

Option A

For A, is the work value add? If I don't care about it AND it's a BS job, I'm not sure I'd even make it a year.

likefunny

Value added for whom?

Started after deployment/ grad school with a big 4 and have very good success with promo & year end. How the HELL are you getting these offers? I can see C and maybe B with total comp, but A?

like

It’s tough to say without additional context on how the offer for A is structured tbf (unless OP posted elsewhere and I’m not seeing it). If it’s $800k base salary that’s a lot different from $200k base with $600k stock vesting over 5 years. Still an insane offer either way, but there could be some serious caveats to that number

C because I actually value my time here on earth. What’s the point if money if you’re only gonna use it for 2 hours a night

like

C and I live in HCOL NY (not NYC tho). The only thing you can't get back is time. Don't discount it. ... But this scale is really skewed right, no one is going to pay you 300-350 for 20-40 unless you've already put in 60-80 for many years and have a niche.

What the base salary on these

If we are in a recession then everyone is hurting. A company can go bust or you can get laid off regardless of the company’s compensation structure. In average times or good times the equity heavy job will win out. If you are unlucky enough to work for a company that goes bust for its own reasons then you can always get another job. My point is this: the rewards of equity compensation upside are disproportionate and asymmetric to the downside. Someone who chooses 350/50 over 200/200 is on average leaving a lot of money on the table.

Nobody can make 350k only working 25 hours / week.

likefunny

Can you tell me the type of org/role you’re in beyond data scientist? Type of work you/your group works on?

C) and I live in Manhattan - NYC

like

I do live in a rather hcol place (not nyc / sf level but close) so that makes me lean a bit towards b but I think in the end I agree w the “c” consensus.

like

Omg...you shouldn't not poll to make this decision. This decision needs to be a personal call because you will have to live with the consequences and those answering the polls.

Has anyone here used a service to help you find a new job? I’m looking at one where they source and apply for jobs for me. They’ll also help me rework my resume, LinkedIn, and other materials, as well as interview coaching. I’ve been looking for a new position on my own with no luck for the past 6 months. The downside of this service is they charge a commission based on the salary for the job they place you in. Thoughts or advice?

Not bragging or showing off, but our household TC is £225k excluding bonuses. Somehow we manage to save £6k a month after paying out mortgage & bills and then a further £2k in corporate pension schemes. We invest our savings but the feeling of putting away £8k each month feels great. I thought when I'd get to this stage I'd have more desires to spend the money but there is nothing I can honestly think of right now that I'd love to buy. I didn't even spend a penny during the black Friday sales

I work in a 7-attorney firm with a national presence. Partly because I’m only a few months in, I work a roughly 8-6 day. I’m also new to billing and often find myself working all day and billing just 4 hours. Whenever I bring this up to the partner, he says it’s good we’re not over billing our client. We don’t have minimum billable hours so it doesn’t matter much for the firm’s sake but I think I’m missing out on learning the important skill of billing my time. Has anyone ever experienced this?
