Initially they just try to check if you can pick up or not. They will also try to build some pressure so that you can understand things independently. I have ben through same situation so now I resign as I was only one offshore and team was onshore so use to work till late daily. Try to work as much as possible, they will consider that you are new and there will be no escalation. Also get habit sitting late because this is how things would work.
I resigned because of no work life balance. Clients don't respect work time and never consider that you are offshore and that's really frustrating
New project joined 2W back. my first user story is a proper dev story. For implementing this functionality one need to have proper functional knowledge of the application. I have to complete it in the current sprint.I don't know how I am going to implement it given its insurance application, big and complex. I fear that if I don't complete it on time there will be escalation for performance issues and will gradually lead to losing my job. I think I should have got some bug fix stories to start with to get the flow of the application.
My team is in onshore and there is gap if i have some queries if I need to ask.
How to explain my trivial situation to my manager if i have to.
I ask my team members but lots of things needs to worked out as it's a completely adding new membership to the application.

Don't stress out. Try what you can. In scrum honestly say you tried these things and say you r new to kotlin.
And also regarding functional requirements, you can ask if someone can help me translate this to complete technical tasks and I can work on that.
Don't worry abt performance issues. I never gave importance to that in my 9 yrs career.
If ur team or manager are so narrow minded who cannot give u chances then that is not the company or team you should b in.
There are so many companies you can try.
Always remember you grow in organization because of ur manager and team support. You can learn any tech on ur own.. Don't stay in a toxic environment.
