Point B vs Slalom?

Depends a lot on their presence and what they specialize in where you live. In general Slalom is a lot bigger and more mature than Point B, but that doesn’t necessarily make one better than the other.

like

I dunno KPMG I feel like your firm is a lot more relaxed than D or PwC, but I wouldn’t call your folks lazy....

Slalom is a place where we put people first, but we still demand excellence. I’ve seen plenty of folks counciled out for both toxic behavior and or poor performance.

What’s nice is we don’t have a hard up or out model. If you want to stay put at a level and get industry type raises you are more than welcome to. If you want to rise up through the ranks you are welcome to as well.

Picking a company alone seems misplaced. What is the role? Does it progress you toward your goals? Do you know who your boss will be? Do you know how they work? What their priorities are?

like

^ by tech they mean Salesforce implementations

like

Slalom is where lazy consultants go, point B is for the oddies, and cognizant is basically staff Aug tech roles (Tata or Wipro type company) tech support post implementation

like

@s2 you're not a niche firm. Also, I am positively not counting peanuts compared to you/ slalom. @s2 I said where lazy consultants go. If you're in consulting your goal is to make ppmd. Not exit to slalom where you're staff aug at clients and everyone is pretty much consultant level (all delivery)

like

I worked at Slalom very briefly, and it was miserable. Low (shockingly low) quality standards, and not nearly as many ex-big 4 consultants as their recruiters tell you. Whoever said it's where lazy consultants go is completely right. I have never met a lazier or more unmotivated group of people in my career.

like

My understanding is that since each local office operates its own PnL, there are offices that are better run than others. New offices are more up and coming, and probably going through growing pains. I’m not expecting the quality of resources to be the same as at the D, but nit everyone at our firms is competent either. More importantly, as an SM, I’ve finally gotten access to a ton of PPDs and I don’t like what I see... the life we all romanticize is not quite as rosy as you’d think, from the workload to the $. I’d rather get out, get more $ (20% jump before even negotiating) and reclaim my life

like

@d2 - i think you have a good handle on things. Some of the newer changes are

1. You can buy into the firm starting at the PAD level. They are thinking of extending this to the PAL level but i have not heard more about that.

2. We have fixed our problem of revenue sharing among offices. So that should help intra-office partnering - granted by the very nature of our structure this won't be as well run as other national companies.

3. The quality of resources is not nearly as good as big 4 on the ppt, communication, mece side of things. But it is much better when it comes to executing. people know their areas inside and out

4. You won't get top line rich here. From what i have seen we distribute our income more equally across the levels. So the top leaves some $$ on the table to distribute to those below them. That being said...earning in the mid 300s isn't too bad

5. you will easily out earn everyone from the big 4 on a per hour rate.

6. We aren't the big 4...its glorious

like

My experience is that Slalom hands you all the tools you need to personally be successful and build the company. I worked with marketing, recruiting, leadership, SMEs, etc to build a practice where there wasn't one, while Id be gunning for project lead elsewhere. I've invested tens of thousands of company dollars and I'm compensated as a result. My resume looks ridic, but I'm turning down offers because nobody has the same opportunities.

On the flip side, there is no Slalom U, fewer proprietary methodologies/assets , less brand recognition, and we just have to be scrappy. It's not easy, but hard work literally impacts P&L we all see monthly. We are growing 5x the rate of every other consultancy as a result.

If you want the opportunity to build a part of a business, you will get opportunities I never saw at Big 4... but if you want to worry about your peers or prestige or the market or the projects you are handed, you will end up looking like one of those "lazy" consultants.

like

I believe point b's compensation structure is different. You get paid hourly and do not get pto (if you want to take pto you are expected to take time off bit not get paid for it).

I can not validate any of this but someone mentioned it a few months back on a previous point b thread

like

When people say Slalom is for “Lazy” Consultants, are they just referring to Consultants who might have a family and or hobbies outside of work, and don’t want to live in planes and hotels, or are these people ACTUALLY lazy and the talent not so great.

like

Meaning don't want to climb to P, MD, D levels. Happy with delivery only

like

Is there not any opportunity to climb there? I’m interested to climb, but want to work local mostly, and travel to sell.

like

I’m looking at jumping to Slalom... the talent is generally ex-big4 that’s tired of traveling. You can climb up the ladder if you want, but don’t have to... I’m going into a leadership role and will shoot to make ppd there the same as I would at the D...

like

^ every firm says the same thing. "People first, culture, etc.)" I'm too old and have been in consulting too long to give a damn about what HR has to pitch and what brain washed consultants believe about their firms. I've worked at Deloitte, Accenture, and I've also worked at a boutique. What I do know is Slaloms work is not big 4 type work, and most of it is in fact client staff Aug. I'm not saying our firms are superior but I do stand by that it's where lazy consultants go.

like

Sounds like you have it all figured out K1. I’ll just go back to being brainwashed, lazy and doing staff aug work... 😉

Have fun counting beans at your accounting firm.

Kpmg is confused on so many levels and saying alex jones level fake news.

We have career levels. We do atrategy, ops, architecture, delivery etc.

Our leaders are focused on creating new offerings and growing slalom.

We are basically a 10 year old firm that is trying to do things differently. We are a niche firm.

When you look at us think entrepreneurial firm doing consulting. Dont try to make us another big 4

like

Wow....after reading all of kpmg1's posts i can say that they are an idiot.

Let me build my case
1. He wont look at data....because any data that doesnt support his point of view is marketing hog wash from hr or brain washed consultants. Basically he has set it up so there is no way to prove him wrong

2. His authority comes from his time in the game and the various firms he has worked at and not any data points. This sounds a lot like the clients we work with from time to time

3. Anyone that is not aiming for ppmd in a big 4 is lazy. I guess that makes small business owners, startup leadership and anyone that leaves consulting lazy.

On this thanksgiving day...i am giving thanks that i dont work w kpmg1
