Political stuff: from what I read, there are only a few key differences between Obamacare and the version the House passed today. Why was there such a hue and cry that Obamacare was disastrous?

As far as I can see, mainly out of spite. The ACA was probably Obama's biggest domestic policy achievement... so naturally, it had to go. Thanks, GOP!

The individual mandate was widely discussed in conservative circles years before Obama. Republicans only came out in opposition because they hated Obama. There are other problems with the law like the fact that there are no incentives to control costs but the individual mandate shouldn't have been a big issue. Republican here

Snarkily, because a black Democrat introduced it. Practically, philosophical disagreements over the concept of quasi-universal Healthcare and the reasoning behind mandatory enrollment and high-risk pools. Now it can't reasonably be reversed without a lot of Republican voters going back to the terrible state of affairs before it passed. The changes are vital though - e.g. Preexisting condition denials expanded to include rape and various other things.

They are big key things, opening the door to shit healthcare plans, preexisting conditions clause. no independent review.

I spent 8 years working at federally funded safety net provider prior to joining consulting 4 years ago. High risk pools or any other, "give the state the money as they know how to best cover their own scheme", has never worked and will never work. I'm somewhat offended when I see someone like a Paul Ryan pretending as if this is some brilliant new idea that "just works" that we haven't thought or tried previously. States have always found a way to avoid getting any extra funding for healthcare to the needy and instead into their pockets.

Why repeal and replace? Why not modify? Besides the fact that modifying it would still carry Obama's name on it .... much cheaper, no?

Individual mandate was more important than pre-existing conditions, apparently.

Reversed here being reversed and replaced. Blanket reversed would be interesting to watch (albeit only because our employers all offer good insurance).

Yeah, though we at least stand to (hopefully) lose less. "Interesting" here falls in the same "dry gallows humor" category as North Korea, though - hopefully nobody here thinks pulling it back is a good idea

The law actually does have several cost control mechanisms such as ACOs. And the cost of healthcare has been growing at a lower rate than it did before, something that was quite unusual.

Loss of preexisting condition protection, or of pocket caps for employer health plans, and an underfunded high risk pool will be devastating
