Generally speaking, I’d say their contributions are about 2-3% of final output. There are great account people out there but typically they’re not hands on in decks and sometimes even their part of getting the info from clients for you to populate the decks doesn’t amount to anything.
They or PM should be tackling next steps for the most part
I think it depends on the work. And also how the agency and client views strategy. In my current one the strategist mainly designs and runs brainstorms and workshops. So as an account person I tend to all everything else to the decks (eg set up) for meetings. I think the best relationship with a strategist was give and take depending on the sitch.
The best ones: 5% for weekly deliverables, 10-20% for big sell-ins. Good AD’s know exactly what the client won’t listen to and are partners in getting your point across.
The worst ones: 0% or 50%, nowhere in between. I was at a holding co. shop where an AS and AD refused to think for themselves and once edited my slides to directly insert client language.

Yes. Totally agree. This is the confirmation I was looking for.
I’ve had amazing account people who were strategic thinkers and built out up fronts of course but also really digested and auctioned what the client really wanted. That is not my experience at my current place 😪

I love those account people. Such an asset. When you go from having them to not, you really feel the absence.
I think there are too many account people today who are just project managers and don’t think it’s their job to be strategic in any way.
