Had a 2015 Cayman GTS, 2016 GT4, and now a 2021 718 GT4. Haven't lost money on any of them. You will take a bath on standard trim 911s going forward as the car market normalizes finally. The last two years for the 992 have been weird due to supply chain issues. Even GT cars will depreciate but at a much slower rate.
Get the GT4
911 carrera S is a great car - but the GT4 is a naturally aspirated Porsche and a GT car.
GT cars practically never drop in value. Plus the next cayman will be an EV (which no Porsche enthusiasts want)
GT4 just needs an exhaust to be uncorked but it’s a machine!!
Only exceptions are:
1) if you need the rear seat for kids
2) if you like to modify your car, the C2S is very Tune-able, you can pretty easily get to 500-600hp with a stage 2
(I drive a 991.2 C2 and am waiting on a GT4 allocation)
This.
911s will hold value even when the cayman is a better drivers car
No way a 911 C2S will hold value better than the last pure internal-combustion GT4 (the next gen will be hybrid). GT cars are special.

The GT4 tends to hold value very well, or at least the 981 generation did
As awesome as the GT4 is, it’s still not a 911
Yes. As awesome as it is, it’s not a 911.
If you are tracking, GT4. If not, the 911.
911s will hold value even when the cayman is a better drivers car
GT4 will hold better than any carrera

The GT4 is sick, and I think they’ll be pretty good at holding value, but the 911 is a safe bet. They’re relatively different vehicles, so you need to pick the one that works the best for your situation.

See if you can find them on Turo or go to a Porsche Experience Center. Pretty much the only options, unless you can make friends with an owner.
911 unless you already have something else. If you’re going to track the cars, GT4 would be my pick
GT4 will hold value really well - id say if you want comfort and a balanced sports car go for 911. If you want the legacy Porsche sports car fun go with GT4. 911s are really big these days and GT4 is just the right size to throw around imo
Like others have said: what do you want it for? Is it going to be you DD? If so, I would look at the 911. If you just want to hoon it around…then get the GT4.
Rising Star
911 Carrera S all the way.
What’s the intended use for the car?
981 (2016) GT4 owner here so slightly biased but GT4 would be my recommendation if you want the most engaging driving experience at a “reasonable” price point. Lower trim 911s are fairly plain and will continue to be outperformed by the next iteration whereas the GT4 is the end of the mid engine ICE era.
Only reason I would recommend 911 is if you have need for rear seats for (small) children or if your age/lifestyle demographic doesn’t suit the racer looking car with a wing.
Agreeing with mostly everything you’ve written, thanks for your thoughts. Planning to expand the family soon so that’s definitely playing a part in the decision.
