Possible to roll yourself off a project if you don’t have another one lined up?

Roll off and do what? You would need to make a case for yourself

like

Not every project will be something you’re interested in. No one can completely control that and at the end of the day client billable work is key to a successful consulting business. When you’re on the bench you’re not earning revenue, but you still generate cost (not sustainable). Make sure your RM and others know where your interests lie but in the meantime think about what this project offers - are you learning something new? Supervising anyone? Managing clients? Team members who can deliver when its not aligned to their preference are the ones people want to help get assigned to their preferences.

like

Bad idea

like

Doesn't matter - all they care for is to keep you utilized

like

OP, line up another project for yourself in a function, industry, and/or technology you have interest in. Network with others to get yourself on a project you want. If you want to get yourself rolled off, that's up to you, but if you don't have somewhere to go that's not recommended.

like

Great way to piss a bunch of people off and get blackballed.

like

Perhaps possible but you run the risk of getting laid off. You also run the risk of developing a negative reputation

like

I’m doing administrative type work and in an industry I️ have no experience in that I️ also have no interest in. I️ feel like I’m getting dumber being here

like

OP looks like you just came on here to complain, expecting people to give you some silver bullet answer or justification for willfully not being billable. Do whatever you want. You clearly didn't really come on here to look for advice.

like

Yeah I’ve seen it done. But her RM hates her and she was benched for months

like

I’m at the pt in my career where I️ feel like I️ need to get deep in an industry and technology so I️ can have my niche. Tired of being put on random projects in random industries

like

You are clearly set on leaving. Your feelings on this are not going to change the reality of the industry. So, you can either stay and continue to complain, stay and try to find something more aligned to your interests, or try to leave to the beach and risk what we said above.

like

Very silly move. You are then overhead and have a target on your back. Think about this from a partners perspective. They are paying you to do nothing and it was your choice....when you COULD be making them revenue. You will get tossed onto the next billable engagement that comes available or fired.

like

If it’s in an area you have no interest but were kinda forced to go to since you were new to the company

Even in a practice where they don’t have even resources to fill the projects?

Why? That seems really important - because for not a very good reason the answer is easily no.

It’s in an industry and a technology I️ have no interest in. My RM and the person on the project who brought me on made it seem like I️ didn’t have a choice but after speaking to my counselor who I️ wasn’t assigned until afterwards said I️ did

Too many scare mongering here. It’s ok to roll off an engagement without the next one in line. Things do not always work for some ppl and that’s alright. It’s for your Demand Manager to worry about your next engagement. Besides some teams do need a bit of bench strength to drive proposals and BDs so there’s no shame in being on the bench. Just make sure you follow up with the Demand Manager and other engagement manager for upcoming opportunities

Do it! Who cares if you get "blackballed" this isn't the college frat scene. You can always find another project or at worse switch firms.

I’d recommend learning the industry, if you have the opportunity. The broader your experience, the more valuable you are to your firm and the more interesting your resume. As you move up, it’ll become more important. Don’t get stuck in a niche - it will limit you in the future

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.

Ok, using excel is not a primary function for my role (this will be very obvious shortly...) So please be kind! On my sheet, in the first and third columns, I have lists of reference numbers. Problem is, I have over 120k rows of data so I can't filter! Help!
