So I just recently passed my CPA exams and I’m now looking for new opportunities. I’m hoping to work at a big 4 firm in tax and possibly connect with anyone working there right now. Please reach out to me, I would look forward to connecting and learning more about potential opportunities. Thanks!EY PwC Deloitte KPMG

I don't want to discourage you but 100% keeping it real, a month is barely a second when it comes to job search let alone getting settled into a new region and establishing a personal and professional network. So from that perspective, yes, you probably need to dial back your expectations quite a bit for your own sake and sanity. Resilience is key in making it through hard times and persistence, too. Definitely too soon to get discouraged - keep at it!!
Negotiate your rate, get it lower and use this time to build relationships. People don’t know you, and therefore they don’t trust you... yet. Give them a digestible rate that gets you in the door, blow their socks off with your Midwest work-ethic and expertise, and next time increase your rate by a percentage.
Also agree that 1-month is NOTHING. Realistically, you need to give it 3-6 months. Use your Chicago network to leverage their relationships in LA, take people out for coffee. Lean into reps to help make connections. Go to industry events with the goal of making “friends” not getting jobs. No one likes desperation. Make friends, then get work. I know it’s so, so hard. You can do it! It’s going to really challenge you in the meantime!! The best of luck to you!
100% agree with all comments above expanding on my point! So hard to write long detailed comments so yay for crowdsourcing!
Agree with FCB1... I’d also be curious, why did you make the move West? If personal/better quality of life, keep those factors top of mind and lean into them as you continue to work at gaining your footing. Set small goals: send 2 notes daily asking for or making introductions, connect with your college alumni chapter and professional events, etc. it takes time, but chip away slowly but surely to your end goal
I’m in chicago too and all your reasons resonate with me as well (except, parents elsewhere). Maybe try leaning into personal life a bit too - use this as an opportunity to balance out a bit while you get your west coast base built up?
It’s rough! I moved to la a few years ago and it took a while to get my feet on the ground. One thing someone mentioned to me Think LA. They host networking events and could be a good way to meet people and do some networking. Good luck and keep chipping away!
Also the wider bowl IS dickish!
Aw I’m sorry you’re having a rough time. Consider taking some of those low-pay jobs; they could lead to something better. And try to make some friends, not just business contacts. It sucks being somewhere all alone.
I’m out here alone, and combined with some chronic illnesses, knowing next to no one, and a bleak freelance and ft job outlook (I get few callbacks and when I do it’s for half my rate). Everyone says give it time but I feel like I’m wasting time here. I network, I try to get out every day... meh. Am I expecting too much?
Hey OP. Chicago Gal here who dabbles in the improv/sketch comedy world. Been in LA for 3 years and totally feel your struggle. Please feel free to reach out. I know how hard it is to find your footing in this city and make connections. You’re not alone. Let’s get coffee.
I’d love that! I’ll message you
