Potentially building a analytics/DS team at a PE focused on improving operations/value capture in portfolio companies. Looking for people with an OR background that can play across supply chain & data science. Strong proficiency in building optimization models (cplex/gurobi) as well as metaheuristic models.

Anyone have this sort of experience? What is the pay range for an OR PhD (manager level)? Where should I be looking for this skill set? Who is the primary competition in the job market?

To clarify, is this at EY to service PE firms or is this fully at a PE firm?

Ok that’s good context. I think OR PhD’s are a good start. Depending on the requirements a MS in OR from top school would possibly suffice. I’d also look at PhD in certain disciplines from business schools as well, such as Operations Management / Supply Chain, Decision Science, and perhaps Finance or Marketing depending on their focus.

I worked in analytics at a supply chain org [in a major city] and we had an incredibly difficult time hiring data scientists. The work was seen as boring. Lots of fascinating data problems to solve - supply chain and ops isn’t one of them.

Operations is viewed as boring. Arcane.

Data science is sexy. Exciting. Novel.

Are you only looking for folks with supply chain and operations experience?

Anybody sick of lateral moves? Was IT EnG. Moving to this country I started as a Manufacturing Technician and in a year or so moved to Operational Manager. Didn’t know better and that was a lateral move hoping for better. Covered a lot of areas and people successfully for a thanks. Fast forward almost 8 years later I stepped down from manager to process engineer for being paid less than my techs. This is another lateral move. I’m still at same tech grade in a salary position. Wait or leave ?
