Contribute whatever % gets you to the max yearly contribution. Do this every year.

Both and Max both out if you can afford it

Do your mean Pre -Tax 401k vs Roth 401k? Or vs Roth IRA?

I max 401k. Traditional

Max trad and max after tax plan (for mega backdoor). Same for my SO.

BCG1, can you better explain your megabackdoor? Do you contribute up to the 55k after tax limit, do an in-service withdrawal of just after tax funds, and push that into a Roth IRA? Do you do this once per year?

Max out your pre-tax, max out your after tax if your firm allows it. Put your Roth dollars in your IRA.

Pw1 - yes, basically. Note that. 55k is the combined limit for employer and employee contributor to all retirement plans. So my $18.5k 401k and profit sharing count against if. Minor: The wrinkle is that after tax always fails non-discrim and I don't know my bonus until December (which partially determines firm 401k cont). So I contribute max to after tax knowing some of it will get refunded for both reasons. Whatever is left gets mega'd to Roth. That number will go to zero for me in a couple years because I'll hit 55 without it.

My husband and I (both 27) max out our Roth IRAs each year, have a complete emergency fund, and I’m able to start maxing my 401K this year (he contributes 10% to his 401K - it isn’t possible for him to max his based on his current pay). We contribute 18% extra towards principal on our mortgage each month. We now have about $20k of additional savings we want to figure out what to do with. What would you recommend to someone who is new to stocks/investments?
