I don’t have any advice on this, but I wanted to congratulate you on both accounts! The awesome job, and growing a human thing! You are bad ass!

What they are offering seems very close to the federally mandated maternity leave. I don't know how much they will budge on it if they are already so close to giving essentially nothing more than what is required by law.

I’m disappointed (contextually) by my company’s 12 weeks across the board, but FWIW we removed our waiting period entirely this year (we had a new dad whose baby was born two months early, two weeks after he started, which I think got it all happening), and it’s paid. The standards for this are often higher in tech and it’s probably reasonable to be disappointed with 14 unpaid (!!) weeks, even if that’d be an absolute treat in many other industries.

Maybe try negotiating for more PTO. Or a PTO signing bonus. Then your equity can vest and they won’t know you’re pregnant… Conversely, maybe the company you’re joining is actually family friendly and would grant you access to the maternity leave of employees with more than 1 year of tenure if you asked?

Are you wanting longer unpaid leave or paid maternity leave?

like

I don’t think you’ll get much there tbh. They’re being generous as it is. 1 year is standard.

A few weeks is early. Risk of Miscarriages

All I can say it did not end well for me when I discussed my benefits at the time I was getting an offer. My recruiter told me it was a turn off for my employer and they’re no longer interested. It was a life lesson for me; thus I take it or leave it if the company benefits don’t suit my needs. Good luck and congrats!!!

Well, how hard do you need to push? Can you make do with the state $$ while on leave, given you have 9 months to prepare, or would it leave you too financially strapped? You don't wanna be in a position where you're worrying too much about money while tending to a newly arrived human.

It’s tough to help without knowing the level of responsibility. Long maternity leaves have different impacts. California only requires a like position when you return. I was forced back after only 6 weeks. If you get 14, you are ahead of the curve.

Congrats! I don’t know if you can negotiate maternity leave, but I negotiated to max equity, and we are all wfh. If I was in kid mode, I’d probably make sure I had a role that I could continue wfh- for closer childcare, easier to pump if you chose/are able.

Hi @databricks 1, was wondering if we could Dm. I received a cold call from Databricks hiring manager and in initial discussions but would like to learn more a about the company and culture

Update from OP: I declined the offer (not due to maternity leave, but they didn’t budge on that). I also lost the pregnancy :-/

Sorry to hear that. Sending you virtual hugs and love. Also if it helps at this time ( apologies if it doesn’t) you are far from alone in this experience.
