All Things MBB

Preparing for MBB case study interview and I’m finding that I take quite awhile (~5 mins) to come up with a framework when it’s recommended to take no longer than 1 minute. Any helpful advice for me?

Reps. More you do, the quicker you’ll get. How much of your 5 minutes is thinking vs. writing? As the prompt is read to you, you should already be thinking about your approach. Also asking simple clarifying questions can not only help focus your approach but also give you more time to think before you say “give me a few moments to put down an approach”

Taking about 3 mins to think and 2 mins to write :/ Curious to see if anyone else had similar issue but got better (quicker) with practice over time!

I don’t think the 1min rule it’s true. I’ve always heard about 90s and sometimes you can take up to 2min

1.5-2mins is fine if you are writing the whole time. Even 2:30 is okay if the framework ends up being specific, thorough, and/or creative. Keep in mind your assessor will probably be taking notes while you do the framework, but you need to get pen to paper to demonstrate your ability to think on your feet.

Yeah you need to be writing while you’re thinking. Put the obvious ideas down. Then take more time to think about more creative solutions. Most of all - practice more

Frame is just an approach. Logical roadmap. It’s not the answer. It’s not a laundry list of what could go wrong (if you are big 4 and do this, it will come off particularly bad) It should indicate where you want to go first. That place should be a focus on what matters most. The answer is probably understanding the cost structure of the business. Also don’t be a robot. Don’t change your pace of speaking. Don’t change your posture. Don’t write feverishly. Don’t start using business jargon. Simplify. Slow down. Ensure understanding. The case is a simulation for how you will work with a project manager or a client to solve problems together. It should be an extension of the first part of the interview, not a different exercise entirely.

Practice and don't need to write everything down on paper. Just enough to give you cues on what to say. Overtime you'll get to shorthand

Friend at BCG said the checkbox is for <2mins for framework. Think most people aim for shorter though as 2 mins can feel long.

I’m prepping for interviews as well - do you want to practice cases together?

Try to have some go-to items ready to go (e.g. profitability, segmentation, etc.) by the time you get to the frameworking. And as you’re writing down the no-brainers, move over to thinking about more customized, outside-of-the-box ideas. It really gets significantly easier as you practice more. A piece of advice I got was also to practice frameworks on everyday decisions throughout the day - helps you think about what’s really relevant to the question itself vs. business buzzwords.

Federal MBB🐠, were you given the opportunity to work any commercial projects your 1st year with the firm (if desired)? Had a final round years ago but friend advised me to stop the process given passion was retail. At the time switching practices was unheard of, have the times changed? Bridges never burned, debating re-kindle conversations...

Can someone explain the difference between FB’s Partner Solutions Manager and the Strategic Partner Manager? From an initial recruiter call, it seems the SPM provides the consultative product recs while the PSM onboards the client onto that product and tracks performance to provide actionable recs as needed. Anyone know career growth and salary for these two? I don’t want a sales heavy/only lateral growth role like their client solutions manager roles so these seem like good compromises?
