@PWC 2 there have always been issues with Radical Islam. @OP the assassination of an ambassador is not the same as an assassination of royalty
Very different from 1914. Russia and turkey have warmed up this helps them both. Allows Russia to grip into Syria and turkey to blame it on gulenists and continue to go after people against the president.
Russia has already classified it as a terrorist attack vs. an assassination, thank god. Wtf is up with radical Islam today? There was an attack on a Christmas market in Germany too
P1: russia and turkey may have warmed up, but turkey and Syria do not have diplomatic ties due to the civil war, and Russia is heavily invested in Syria, no?
I'm not trying to needlessly say the sky is falling, but the parallel to be drawn to 1914 is that archduke Ferdinand's assassination was just the event that forced everyone to weigh their competing allegiances. In my personal opinion, I could easily see something similar here.
How many times did an assassination not cause a world war? Trying to draw similarities between today and 1914 is far fetched.
@k1: fair statement. I think, the context of these specific parties is what worries me:
Russia is heavily involved in Syria, which shares its northern border with turkey (and is turkey's largest border). Additionally Syria and turkey haven't shared diplomatic ties since the civil war began in 2012.
Keep in mind that Russia invaded the Crimean peninsula under the auspices of "protecting Russians, even if they don't live in Russia", which is a pretty weak excuse if you ask me. They have shown a willingness to test a boundary on lesser causes than an ambassador being shot by a Turkish policeman.
@A1: One of our political parties here in the US sure seemed to take offense to our ambassador dying in Benghazi, and lost no sleep in using it as a tool to argue policy, hobble another party's agenda, and rally a whole lot of people to a cause.
I'm just saying I wouldn't write it off.
