Principal from a T2 firm in SE Asia. In discussions with one of the MBB for a Sr. Principal / AP role and one of the B4 for Partner role.

I’ll try to assess the cultural fit and where do I feel better opportunities for growth & commitment from current partners. Beyond that, 2 questions from the group:

1. In short term, I anticipate that B4 Partner financial offer will be better. However, would you say that MBB partners make more in longer term?
2. Any other guidance from the group here?

I don't know how much B4 partners make in SEA but significantly less than MBB partners is my guess, so mid-term (3-5 years), the MBB is a better option IF you make it to partner. You should negotiate and ask for a guaranteed promotion or a senior commitment from the regional managing partner to supporting you (even if they are not able to commit to a guaranteed promotion in writing). I've seen it happen, even with a verbal commitment, if it's from the managing partner.

The odds of there being a longer term are higher at Big 4.

Agree with P1.

Also, MBB are also much harder for external hires - the processes are designed for people to grow within the firms.

Also from SEA. Happy to chat with you on DM and provide perspectives.

Would love to hear this as well... BCG1 do you want to share openly? Also in Singapore and have been speaking to MBB

Apparently not

Go MBB. If it doesn’t work out, big 4 a good fall back option, and you’ll have better negotiating ability after the MBB stint.

I declined an AP offer from one of the MBB in SE Asia. Not BCG obviously. DM for more details, happy to share my thinking

Please share TC

Was in the partner program at a big 4 before choosing to try building something here at RB as a Principal.
Overall in SEA the partner comp in big 4 for someone being recruited directly from outside as a Partner is relatively competitive. The challenge or the question is the type of partnership you want to be a part of.
Big 4 partnership comp model and culture is not as performance driven. Leading to a disproportionate time in managing upwards and globally to get leads and recognition. At the same time if you are in it for the very long haul, big 4 have the cash and patience.
Partnership in T2 firms can be very challenging as the scale demands you to be a rainmaker.
DM if you’d like details.

Even if you deliver exceptionally, that is just 1 of the 4 quadrants in which you'll be judged - and it may not be enough to get a good bonus/hike
You need to prove in the other 3 quadrants as well - like generating revenue, certifications, what you are offering to EY in terms of knowledge sharing or training, etc.

Is there a general expectation that a Partner has an MBA?

I doubt it's required at most firms but I'm a pretty senior staff and when I speak with Partners, they seem to speak with an MBA level of business knowledge which extends past their technical skillset.

I realize that's what makes them good Partners but it makes me wonder if I realistically need to get an MBA to keep growing and hit Partner.

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.
