I've met homeless people in the Bay Area who make over $300k. Not a good offer.

P1, a fun game I like to play walking down the streets of SF is “tech billionaire or homeless?” ...they’re usually homeless

Thanks all. Decided to take it. Spouse makes $550k. HHI income $850k. I think we’ll be ok 😉

Congrats!

Principal? Ask for more base. Bay Area is $$$

You won’t be able to afford a home here with that comp. I would negotiate a higher base.

You could get this salary as a Director at a biotech. Why would they offer this at the principal level?

like

Depends what you’re doing for them. If you’re doing SOX, that’s a decent gig, but if you’re like a principle product manager or engineer, that’s no bueno.

What type of role/function? This could be the best offer for the particular role at any company but still too low to be comfortable in the bay. If you have a family, even a 150k offer in a low cost of living city will get you a better quality of life than $300k in the bay area. Renting a decent house in a good school district will eat up $5k per month, at least. If you’re single though, this offer starts to look a lot better because you could save a lot of cash and still live in a luxury 1 bedroom.

Congrats!

If you plan to leave your firm and your manager asks you why you're leaving, what do you say? I have a legitimate non-bridge-burning reason unrelated to comp or simply "big tech is better" reason. I have asked for more client facing exposure and haven't gotten it cause weird reasons, which was the factor that caused me to look for exits in the first place. But I'm not sure if I should bring this up. Should I just be vague and say "looking for a new chapter"?

I’m definitely looking for longevity not a hopper.
