Even if perfect, private schools seem like a bubble and protective cocoon, just not real enough.

The #1 difference is in unspoken norms that unconsciously influence the child their entire life. In private school, every parent values education enough to pay for it and the expectation at home is that learning is high priority. In public school, in many cases it's not "cool" to care about studying and learning. What our children see as "normal" in formative years influences their entire life.

It really depends on your location

Every child is different. Some kids need different teaching styles and classroom environments to be successful. Personally, providing my kids some exposure to more diversity of experiences and backgrounds is important to me, although I’ll admit our public schools aren’t as diverse as I’d like. I do not understand how a private school provides a more “whole person” education, but then I attended a public high school. (I went to private school through elementary.) Our public schools are great, great teachers, great families, a variety of backgrounds, and our kids are thriving.

Totally agree with all that you said. We are fortunate to be able to get all of those things in our public schools. Understand and respect that not everyone can and also that everyone’s needs are different.

If public is rated 9, why spend money on private? I’m torn because public elementary and middle are rated 6, but high school is a 3. My husband is worried that if we wait until high school to send our son to private, he will already be behind.

I’d also suggest not putting much stock into those rankings. If you’re in doubt, go to the schools and learn about their teachers, students, environment...ask questions to determine if it may be a good fit for your child. Those rankings won’t tell you that

I went to public and my husband went to private. He is better at networking, public speaking, and taking risks. I did well by memorizing, following rules, and being quiet. I figured out how to pass tests but not necessarily understand the material. Our kids are in private school, and we started with preschool. The problem with waiting until later is there are less open spots. The only way we would put out kids in public is if they test into G&T.

Right on. It’s much more difficult to get into good private school later if not in kindergarten, etc. if you have twins, triplets, that’s even harder. I experienced this myself for my children switching from one private school to the other better private school.

I have sent my two children to private school since preschool (they are in middle school now). The reasons for us are that private schooling children are better prepared as a whole person as well as they have the life-time supporting community the children are growing up with. Yes, it’s a lot of money but giving our children a good community benefiting their life-time and a solid whole-person education better than leaving them with our savings.

We are big proponents of public schools and picked our location to be in a good district. Both kids turned out great, went to top tier schools, and are having no issues of being behind. I feel like my kids had a diverse experience that made them aware that there are a wide variety of people with social and economic differences. And it made them a little tougher (ie, they had to fight harder to get what they wanted.) We made sure to stay involved and did run into the “not cool” issue, but helped them work through it. If there wasn’t a good system in our area, we’d have had to go private.

Committed parenting is crucial to guide our children through the ups and downs regardless private or public school. My philosophy is building a supportive community, including parents and establish in our children high moral ground and sold high integrity values during their early age will build a good foundation for them to navigate in the real world. They can tell the right from wrong when they have to face the situation alone.

I went to a private high school from public middle school. All I can say is that everyone that went to private school k-8 was significantly better prepared than I was. That didnt mean you can't get a good education at a public school but the parents probably have to put in more work. Now if you live in a wealthy community where the public schools are effectively private schools it probably didn't matter as much. I'd add that if money is an issue you gwt a better bang for your buck on private high schools (assuming you can get in), but I'm taking about the great ones (Philips Exeter, St Paul's etc). I did not attend the aforementioned schools but had quite a few friends who did.

I went Charter School with my daughter since it goes from K-12. We are considering parochial for high school but mainly for their soccer program and the schools are similarly rated. Education-wise, the Charter seems pretty good and requires the parents to volunteer to stay engaged.
