McKinsey & Company Has Mckinsey met BA headcount quota for the year/did they freeze hiring? I interviewed and got to last round last year, and applied again with a referral two months ago but haven’t heard anything from recruiting. Last year I heard back within 1 month of referral drop. I would’ve thought with my 1 more year of experience I should be able to get an interview easily.🥲 McKinsey & Company

Simplified guidelines:
If a small company (e.g. seed, series a) it is somewhat binary - either the company succeeds and you make a lot of money, or it is worthless. You need to figure out if you believe in the company. It won’t be a part of yearly TC exactly (since it won’t be liquid for a long time), more a big payout down the road.
If a larger company (e.g series e) just value it at the last valuation and think of it as part of your TC. There is some risk it tanks in value, there is some potential it multiplies in value. But it likely won’t be worthless, and a bunch of smart late-stage investors valued it at whatever number for a reason.
If company size is in the middle, think of it somewhere in the middle
It is absolutely not worthless right now though, at any company except a bad one.
No problem! I think a lot of consultants / corporate people have this misconception about equity being worthless or randomly having some value that I want to correct. In tech, which everyone knows is a well-paying industry, equity is a big part of comp and taking these roles can pay off majorly over the course of a career (even if sometimes they don’t work out).

Consider it a lottery ticket. It could be worth millions. Or it could be a piece of paper.
Would it ever be worth taking a job at a pre-IPO unicorn that doesn’t offer equity (at least not initially)?
I personally would not do that. I will never work at a company again where I do not have some equity stake (even if only a few bps). But that’s just me.
Of course, if their cash is way above market many people would consider it. If at/below market and without equity though, see very little reason to take it
