If you get the offer, I’d go. There were reasons you started looking in the first place. But that’s just me and I’d try to remember those. Plus if the only time your employer is going to entertain promoting you, or paying you more is when you threaten to leave, it’ll forever be a long and difficult road you’ll have to forever cross to get ahead. I don’t subscribe to this method, but if you’re ok with it, stay and negotiate until your heart is content. I know people who have successfully done that. G’luck either way!

Earlier this year I was in discussions with two other companies both of which were offering about 50k more than I was making at the time. I love my current job and boss and although the new companies seemed like they could be good too, I really wanted to stay. I spoke with my boss and told her about the other opportunities and how close to 5 companies had been trying to recruit me and she was able to get me a 35k raise, even though the company was not giving raises this year. This may not be typical but I think it depends on your relationship with your boss and also how valued you are by the company. I didn’t wait to get an offer although one or two were imminent, and I think that helped because it showed that my intention was to stay if at all possible. I am still happy and plan on staying here for as long as possible. Hope that helps!

This was incredibly helpful. I’m in a similar position. I LOVE MY COMPANY AND BOSS. She is working on a raise for me because she knows I’m below market and I had previously asked her if I needed to look to get them to match- she said not yet and has always been supportive of my career development. I’m thinking after the next round I may broach the topic with her- pre-offer. Or wait until after the final interview but before the offer comes in.

For in house positions, just curious- it is also a taboo if you jump too soon?

like

I’ve never heard that. The only reason it might be too soon is because you don’t have the experience, But then again it also matters a lot what kind of company you were going to. If you’re going to be a specialist at a large company then you hopefully have the experience from your law firm days however if you’re going to become a generalist you’re probably going to have to learn a whole lot on the fly, which is true really for any generalist. Law school teaches you very little about being a generallist at a company

like

Just curious, how many years out of law school are you?

What is a “long range effective tax rate”? I was asked in an interview what I would need to create a long range ETR schedule if I was in the role. I know how to calculate ETR and assumed “long range” meant forecasted, so I basically described that you would need a forecasted pre tax PTBI, book-to-tax adjustments and the anticipated taxes paid. How bad did I miss this question? The interviewer looked at me like I had 2 heads. 🤣🤣🤣

🐠 From Europe here. From what I read in the posts, I have the doubt about the prestige in the CV that those strategy firms that are not MBB (OW, ADL, RB,...) have in the US. Sometimes it seems that an advisory team from a B4 has more prestige than a T2 strategy firm. Is this correct in the United States? In Europe it is not.
