Product counsels, how often do you hire outside counsel? Any advice on budget management?

Unfortunately the answer is, it really depends.

And it really depends on a lot of different things - ex from a transactional perspective: how big is your company and what type of internal resources do you have available (do you have access to specialist attorneys in-house), is the product novel or emerging technology, are your business clients trying to sell globally into countries where you are not licensed, etc. From a litigation perspective: volume of litigation could vary depending on the risks of the product you support and whether your company is high profile/ deep pockets.

Generally only for speciality work for which we don’t have in house resources. For example, I’ll occasionally engage outside counsel for assistance with export. Or local counsel to support setting up an office in another country, working through local labor requirements, etc.

Does anyone have any experience with NJ mini-COBRA for small businesses? Trying to find an answer to a few questions and coming up empty: (1) what are the penalties for failure to send continuation notice (federal COBRA is $100/day, but don’t see anything in NJ statute or case law); (2) if an employee is terminated for cause are they eligible and must they receive the continuation notice? What constitutes cause (as opposed to gross misconduct under Federal standard)?

A friend has been offered a role as an independent contractor commercial counsel in house (NYC pre IPO tech company) (10-20 hrs/week, with possibility to turn into a full time position). Sorry for cross-post but is in-house a feasible exit option for attorneys with the federal government? Let me preface this by saying that this is super premature as I just got the tentative offer from the government for a position focusing on labor and employment litigation before the EEOC, but I wanted to plan ahead and see what my options were down the road if I'm looking for a bigger paycheck. I'm currently 13 YOE in private practice at mostly small/mid size firms.

How long can you take to accept an offer? I received a forma offer today and have one more interview with another company for another position that I’m considering. I expect that the other company will let me know if they plan to make an offer by the end of the week. I am seriously considering both and want to give each a chance. Is a week acceptable to accept an offer?

Currently interviewing with Amazon for an associate corporate counsel role. After the first round, I was quickly moved on to the written exercise but its now been a month since I submitted it and I haven’t received any update on my application despite following up with HR once. Wondering if anyone is in a similar boat and whether I should just write it off as a refusal… if anyone here works at Amazon, would be helpful to know if this is common. Thanks!

Applying for some in-house M&A jobs, and a big focus is being able to run deals. I of course feel very comfortable running deals from the corporate side and managing multiple teams, but have obviously always had an army of specialists in biglaw. How does this work in house? I’m primarily thinking from a tax perspective — I likely wouldn’t be able to structure a deal (and don’t think many of my peers could either) since we always rely on a tax team, but not sure if that is an expectation.
