Depends on what is being designed. Machines lack creativity. Look at items designed by engineers (products, software, etc) and you can tell they were created with a checklist and function foremost. It takes a designer to consider ease of use, functionality and whimsy. People want beauty and fun in their lives.
Not as much. I feel like 80% of what we do today will be automated in the next 3-5 years but the remaining 20% will be the new 80%. UX of connected environments/voice/conversation etc. The fundamentals will stay the same, but new kind of problems being solved. I anticipate lots of relearning but that pretty much goes along with our field
Nah, but designers will have to be increasingly systems oriented as designs start to be auto generated by AI. Think of a designers who still goes through the cycle but when it comes to wireframes they’ll just be “pulling the levels and setting parameters” rather than fully drawing it out.
Why is a visual designer asking product designers?
Design titles holds no value. They’re all interconnected and the only value they hold is at company you work at. I’ve been called a visual designer, a product designer, a user interface designer, and a digital designer at different companies for the same job role throughout my career.
I wouldn’t worry, even as automation builds from what I’ve seen the Focus is because the work has built up so much there aren’t enough humans to fill the role. For example, Spotify’s banners are generated by an algorithm because they put out thousands of customized banners a day that cannot be generated without intensive man power (that frankly; no one wants to do) but these aren’t tasks you need a person for. It’s the person or team that conceited the modular banner system that were essential to its development.
