Professionals that moved / transferred to NYC (let’s pretend normal times), is the work culture as intense as it seems? How is it compared to where you moved from?

Moved from Chicago. Much more intense in business. Generally people marry / have kids later so they’re available to grind in the office later. Chicago people still worked hard but the environment was different with most people being offline from 6-9pm.

Being in New York I’m awfully curious what this work culture is like outside of New York can somebody tell me?

Wow. I can’t even imagine taking an hour for lunch LOL. Been in NYC all my life.

I grew up in NYC. I moved to LA and I was getting so annoyed at how people work so slow and I realized that people didn’t work 60+ hours. It took a few months to adjust from 60+ being the norm to 40 hours

I never got use to it, had to move back East. So happy to hear you adapted!

If you can make it in NYC you can make it anywhere they say, so I totally moved here with that mindset thinking the work hours around the clock was just part of “making it” here. Oh how naive of me.

As a childless person it matched my drive to work perfectly, post children it would be hard to keep up.

Came from the Midwest, it is super noticeable. Partners/directors working consistently past 9/10 with you on projects, even with families. The grind is the norm.

I was in Boston before and we consistently worked past 9-10...those with families too (though they’d break for 3 hours for dinner/kid bedtime).

Coming from Canada - yeah it was pretty noticeable.

Also from Toronto! Moved here two weeks ago, haven’t started working (I’m in consulting) but I’m a little scared... how does it compare to firms in Toronto?

Depends on the industry. Finance is intense sometimes. Advertising/marketing tend to be pretty chill.

First adult job was in NY and have worked here since. It’s part of the sacrifice, and there’s 100+ other ADs looking at my job if I decide it’s too fast for me. I’m young enough to enjoy it still

Haha I completely get it. before I got into advertising “Art Director” sounded like such a hack job.

As an adult I've worked in Boston, DC, LA, London, NYC. Saw no difference between DC and NYC; both cultures are awful in terms of working constantly. LA just as described above, much more relaxed. London more like LA. Boston I was straight out of college and working in government and it was less intense than DC/NYC, but not sure how representative that was. Also nearly 20 years ago (aaaaah!!).

Moved here from Chicago, definitely different. I’m leaving the city after more than a decade and this is the main reason. Im completely burned out working 12hrs a day at a breakneck speed. Im looking for a place where they value living over working.

After 2-3 weeks from the interview, the recruiter reached out to me saying she would like to connect with me but then it kept rescheduled & transferred to other recruiter so I dont know if they are planning to extend an offer (which i start to doubt) or not. They didnt even send me a rejection email so I don’t know how long I need to wait for them. Is this a normal process in EY?
