Progesterone shots … I didn’t realize there were different oils to pick from. Anyone get good intel here? My insurance covers regular ones (sesame oil) but my Nurse said paying out of pocket for compounded ones is worth it (less pain in her opinion). 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh boy, I’m sadly the expert. First of all, there are two ways to take in progesterone: via an injection or orally. The injectable version comes in sesame oil; specially pharmacies can do a compound progesterone by using alternative oils such as olive oil; that said, sesame oil is “lighter” so easier to break down in the muscle tissue. However, NONE of them actually dissolve well in your buttocks, they create bumps and bruising (redness, swelling) as the substance accumulates over time. So, let’s go over the oral version. Some “brilliant” group of men at the FDA decided to approve the first version of progesterone pills with peanut oil - that’s right, you can’t have peanuts in schools or airplanes but somehow OK in medicine; the industry then went the cheaper route of using the same formulation for generic versions, thereby offering no alternative to peanuts! For people with peanut allergies, as a result, only injectable version is an option.

Also, I ended up needing to do the shots every other night because I couldn’t handle the side effects and I still ended up with a pregnancy. So, clearly, these shots don’t make or break your chances. Stay hopeful.

I paid out of pocket for olive oil. I had major allergic reactions to the sesame oil, which apparently is not uncommon.

I was fine with the sesame oil ones (sooo cheap). Opted for rest OVER suppositories because they are expensive and messy AF.

I took the oral ones vaginally and it’s a bit messy but definitely not painful

I have a bachelors in business management and 4.5 years of experience in different functions of HR & have worked for large organizations such as Blue Cross Blue Shield.
