Project based fee vs hourly fee...which do freelancers and consultants prefer?

You never want anyone to be penalized for being efficient or ahead of schedule so whether I am hiring freelancers or am a freelancer myself, I prefer an agreement with a flat fee for the project with an hourly rate for any extras or changes. The flat fee is based on estimated hourly and materials.

Time and materials is usually better unless you've really got the estimates nailed and won't creep.

As a consultant, a role that typically has limited control of external factors, I usually negotiate a day rate. Project fees are insensitive to the evolving nature of consulting gigs. Hourlies focus too much on the clock for me and client. For an agency engagement, it's rare for a client to accept T&M. If not retainer, project-fee based on scope and managed via status and change orders (if necessary) is usually best.

I also want to add is which do clients prefer? Some client prefer a flat fee invoice while others want to see an hourly breakdown. I'm just curious to see what individuals and co pay prefer to have a better understanding of the what's happening in the biz😊

As a client I find it easier to do the hourly breakdown. Plus I can get a better sense for how long different types of projects take and thus budget accordingly going forward. All that being said I also like the previous comment about a flat fee + hourly on top to ensure freelancers are compensated fairly. Either way, just be honest with the client. As long as you are delivering solid work, I am always willing to be flexible.

So I’m one of 2 BA’s on a project where we’re not given much responsibility by our SC( He’s acting M). He owns almost everything from USI calls, calls with the clients (he leads/doesn’t include us), and only allows us to execute testing and when I ask to support in other activities he says “it’ll be easier if I just do it.” I understand that however how are we expected to develop, learn, and get ready for our next roles? I just feel as if he’s not very good at delegating.

Please suggest.

If I don’t answer emails in evening I feel like balls will drop. I can’t demand that they work after hours too. Anyone else go through this on either side? Is 9-6 doable in our advertising
