“You’ll never grow as a project manager”?! Project managers after 8 years are called Engagement Manager,” Senior Manager,” or “Director.”

Managing is an art. It’s all dependent on how you shape the PM role. I asked to be pulled out of the functional cons track early on and began managing accounts as well as delivering releases and solutions as a staff and senior consultant. Good project managers will also know the solution. I’ve met several functional and business process consultants who lack the adeptness to lead and manage. Wit 3 years of experience, I can play the role of a M and SM. I’m now bouncing to an IB as an associate director. Don’t be narrow minded.

Kind of a double edged sword. Every project needs management but it's also a skill a lot of people have. I would say gain some expertise elsewhere. You'll never grow as a project manager.

Everybody should do the pmo role on a big project once, for several months. Some people make a career out of it for a while. Doing so could be limiting if done for a long period of time (years) without also doing other roles that require more domain knowledge.

There's a massive difference between being the engagement manager within your practice, and working for a pmo team who loans out project managers on demand. The former is crucial to your career growth. The latter can be a career death sentence. It doesn't need to be that way but pmo typically acts like the budget management aspects of the job are so hard and only they can do them, while totally missing that the valuable part of engagement management is being fully involved in what's happening with your team, the deliverables, the client, etc, and tailoring your behavior to keep all that on track, not just the budget.

Hello! I have a two part question: 1) is it worth it to obtain an SHRM specialty credential if I don’t have the broader SHRM certification? 2) has anyone gotten the People Analytics or Talent Acquistion credential? If so, how valuable was it from a learning perspective? Do you feel it significantly contributed to your knowledge in either area? Thank you!

So stuck. What do I do? I joined this firm a year ago (4 yrs exp total) to grow/get more court/client exposure. Then 2 more-experienced associates were hired, pandemic, & all cases are divided between the other 2. I have no defined tasks except deficiency letters or the odd pro bono case. Boss claims it's mentoring. I still need to meet bill req.

Last wk Boss said I'll do more & my work was good, but today said I can't 2nd chair bc I don't have experience. I'm doing less now than my prior firm.

I'm drowning in one-off business logic or planning requests ever since the last shuffle of devs. I'm the most senior, and def know the most, but on a team where our devs wear many hats, it means that I don't get to code nearly as much as I want to.

I also feel like these one-off requests do nothing for my career, as they're not seen as valuable to anyone other than the requesters.

Has anyone been in this position? What do I do to combat this?
