Pros and cons of going into pharma? Obviously the salary. But I’m concerned about being stuck in pharma once I start as a junior. How can I be sure to grow as a writer and move on from it?

I’ve gone back and forth from pharma and consumer. Just be sure you land at a shop that does DTC pharma work. A lot of P&G accounts, like Pepto or Crest, are technically considered pharma. If you feel yourself becoming stale because of churn, the good news is you’ll probably have time to invest in outside endeavors or just take yourself on little creative field trips.

You can make it work, I promise.

Also, google “Fred troller geigy” or “herb lubalin cough” to see good examples of old school pharma design/copy. It wasn’t always bathtubs in forests and families at barbecues!

I'm a bit biased, but going into healthcare pays a bunch and you don't have to sell out to pharma. Food for thought. You can also market yourself as healthcare and get out of pharma eventually. Nothing is forever if you don't want it to be.

It’s a slippery slope. If you’re working on lupus and cancer medication like I was, you’ll have to grow your portfolio outside that & do spec. I managed to get out but a lot of people got stuck. Choose carefully if it’s pharma and like others said, do it on a brand that’s open to doing fun/rewarding work.

Depends on what kind of writer you want to be and which agencies you’d like to land.

I think a promotion would come with a raise, but the percentage difference would most likely only grow and I’m not sure that would be ok with the responsibilities I’d be stepping into. Any advice?

Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, let’s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?

I am applying to more positions through staffing agencies as one way to get a writing job. When they tell me the hourly rate and I suggest a few dollars higher per hour, they'll say, "Just so you know, the competition is priced lower than you."

Is this to scare me into submission to charge less so that they can profit more? Or is an employer really not going to pick me because I am priced 1-$2 more per hour than someone else? Wdyt?
