Cons: hot af in the summer, not very diverse, food scene is below average (when compared to other t2 cities), ‘live music capital of the world’ but most local bands suck Pros: no state income tax, best city in texas, still relatively cheap if you’re coming from a t1 or t2 city

Houston is the most humid** city in the country lol. Austin not too far behind But all kidding aside Austin is diverse af. Never seen so many Indian people outside of an offshore zoom call. Anyone calling Austin “not diverse” has 0 clue what they’re talking about

My turn because a lot of nonsense here. The summer can be miserably hot. But it’s a few months. Then we generally get 9 months of fantastic weather - what others may call winter is actually quite pleasant here. Everything everywhere is brand new. The city is generally quite beautiful since it’s all built in last 20 years. The people are pretty great. Lots of transplants but still Texas charm. The people like living in Austin and are proud of it. Other than housing it is very affordable. Tons of great food. No idea the complaints being stated here. Sure no African. Lake Travis is beautiful. Several nature areas to explore and literally right outside the city at that. Austin is a magnet for company expansion and moves. Lots of companies moving here. General lifestyle is great - laid back culture yet still a well to do city. Cons - affordability is becoming a major issue. The housing prices are absurd even when comparing to larger tier cities. Airport is rapidly growing but still not a major hub. Homelessness bs was a failed experiment modeled after Seattle’s and San Francisco’s stupidity but now starting to get cleaned up. Traffic is bad in a few spots but I’m sorry it is nothing like other cities. I was in Chicago a few weeks ago and we were picking up a dog and went to lunch. The whole ordeal was like a 3 hour process. It simply doesn’t take that long to get around Austin.

Red ash was the only really good one. Everything else Italian wise is pretty sub-par in Austin (although I’m from the Northeast so spoiled with Italian)

I’ve lived in many places around the US and I currently live in Austin. Now I have huge disclaimer that SoCal has ruined me. As an automotive enthusiast and motorcycle rider, nothing will best SoCal for me. The weather is unreal, literally heaven, and the roads and automotive culture is top tier. In b4 “the traffic” crowd appears, Austin has a shit load of traffic but unlike LA or NYC people here are idiots on the road which makes the traffic absolutely unbareable. The weather is so humid it makes the hot temperature suck so much I don’t even want to go outside. I literally just wear athletic wear all day bc if I go to throw out the trash and come back in the house I’m already DRENCHED in sweat. And if you want to go outside and do something, get ready to stand outside in a line for 2 hours. Way too over populated here, and I understand the irony of someone from LA/NYC saying this, but like LA/NYC can handle it and Austin cannot. It’s like imagine all the congestion, insane housing costs, and homeless people in LA but without all the beautiful weather and gorgeous women (and men FWIW), that’s what you get in Austin. I for one do enjoy the laws and lack of state income tax here. If you come to Texas you don’t need the govt to tell you what to do. You want to wear a mask? You want to get a vax shot? NO ONE is stopping you. But no one is forcing you to either. Abbott is actually a great governor despite what all the blue pilled crowd cries about all day long, which again is ironic bc these freedoms are what’s bringing in all the people in Texas/Austin and then they come here and just complain about it.

CA is just a dumpster fire

Pros: you’re in Texas…..sort of. Housing market is booming (great if you own a home). Cons: Overrun with Californians. Traffic is bad. Housing market is booming (terrible if you’re trying to buy a home).

I live in Austin and it makes me miss Midland/Odessa sometimes 🤣

Can be very frustrating as a liberal / democrat to live in Texas, even if you’re in a major city Source: born & raised liberal Texan who only came back to Houston because of the job offer

A1 not requiring masks doesn’t mean a person can’t make a personal choice to wear a mask. Not mandating it simply a tenant of liberty. There is not voter suppression. Happy to discuss that bill in depth. Please point out any portion of it that suppresses the vote. Extended voting hours, additional polling places. You need ID to buy a pack of cigarettes or a case of beer, requiring one to vote is in no way suppression. It can even be an expired ID. Liberals tend to want more government oversight of literally everything except voting. You don’t find that odd?

Good food, good trials and lot of outdoor stuff to do. Little expensive but not as much as tier 1 cities.

I know the UK pays less but I am seeing differences of $80-100k for Advisory M at one of the Big 4. Why in the world are salaries so low? And don’t say healthcare. My healthcare is like $140/month for a PPO w low deductible. Plus taxes are less here. Makes the thought of a potential move over there hard :/

Anyone here who works at Venable? In IP Department ideally. Looking for your thoughts about firm culture generally, work life-balance, how the atmosphere is for women, how the working relationships between staff and attorneys seems, how turnover is these days, etc. Am considering applying for a position there that would remote working and I think would be a job that does work for all of the offices that have IP groups (which may be all of them?)

Moving to manhattan and looking for neighborhood advice. 22 years old, looking for a neighborhood/area with a good music scene, good bar scene, decent commute to midtown, other people my age, and that isn’t filled with finance bros. Any data points on which neighborhoods offer even just one or two of these would be immensely helpful.
