It’s sometimes easier to commute from JC/Hoboken than from some parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn
Can I hijack OP's thread and ask all these JC fish to be my friends? I moved here right before COVID and would love to finally make some friends here.
Cool. I'm in downtown off Columbus just west of Grove. Let's plan a meet up!
Hoboken is nice, and the social scene is ehh very Penn state + Rutgers crowd. The bus to port authority takes ~20 min and is a much better experience than the path. It's def doable
There are more PATH options from JC than Hoboken and in my opinion more to do overall. One train is only 2 stops to WTC and another train has several stops along the west side of Manhattan, ~25 min to 33rd and 6th. You definitely get more for your money and you are close enough to Manhattan where you don't miss it.

Would you guys ever live in journal square or the heights in JC? I think that’s the only truly cheap place left in JC.
Only downside to the heights is no good access to the PATH for commuting into Manhattan. JSQ is fine.
There's also McGinley Square area which is cool. Get yourself a little electric scooter and the downtown PATH stop is only 5-10 minutes away.
short term no issues…longer term it will be completely under water from climate change. rent don’t buy :-)

It's only a pain late nights and on the weekends.

I’m loving it.
If you don’t go out much you’ll be fine. I live right by the local rail in JC and don’t have any problems.
I live in downtown JC and commute to midtown for work. It's not bad at all...the lower COL here is worth the time on the train. But I have two young kids, so the extra space we can get here is the biggest upside (I have a 1200sq ft duplex that I pay the same amount as a studio/1br in most of Manhattan). I do really like my neighborhood though.
And as for going into the city for recreation: if you live close to the PATH, it's not bad at all. Easy access to west village/Greenwich village, union square, and midtown. I go to Brooklyn fairly regularly, but that only gets to be a hassle if you're trying to come back really late when PATH goes to every 20 or 40 minutes.
Pros: COL while still getting the benefits of city life and access to NYC proper.
Cons: traveling to the city takes longer (but my commute is still shorter than my colleagues who live in prospect park area in BK).

If you’re on the Southern end of Hoboken near the Path train, then you’re closer to downtown and midtown than most Brooklyn residents. If you’re on there north end, then you’re likely going to be taking the ferry to the Javits center and that’s more of a negative.
Did the city for 10 years and feel like I go out more now in Hoboken/JC than I did in Manhattan. It is all about what you and your friends want.
