Pros and cons of taking an in-house job?

I moved from an agency job to in-house and loved it

Pros:
- better work / life balance
- ability to really help the brand day to day, beyond just one off ad campaigns
- nice to stay in one voice and evolve it
- stronger ability to evolve brand from the inside
- opportunity to test things and play: from email subject lines to what copy drives people to click in IG stories

Cons
- Overall, less well-rounded work in your book for the time you’re there
- may feel limited having fewer voice to take on
- if you find writing captions, email newsletters, blog posts, in-store signage, etc boring, and prefer big OOH billboard and TV campaigns, winning awards, etc you may be bored by the day to day work. I personally find a ton of room to play and test, but everyone has something else that drives and excites them

Really depends on the industry, but in general CM1 covered it. All I'd add is try finding an internal agency that's modelled like an external agency. AD+CW partners reporting into a CD, and we all treat our company as the "client." It's easier to still make creative work this way because creative is still valued somehow.

A good question to ask the in house people you interview with is if the (higher up, gcd level) creatives have a seat at the bigger company table or if it's all folded under marketing. Then ask how the relationship with marketing is navigated.

Thank you, this was helpful too!

If you find a brand that cares about creative that's gold. Otherwise, it's all about processes and templates 😴 and not about your talent.

Freelance rate for a :30 national broadcast spot script?

Anyone else get tired of the LinkedIn charade? Every day I see countless posts by people in advertising/marketing that come across as preachy, self-indulgent, humble brags that annoy me.

Like, the pompous CEO/CD who writes a long post about that time he hired an intern and learned a valuable life lesson that we could all learn.

Or the super-duper smart Copywriter who regurgitates Olgyvisms that we’ve all read a billion times to show his or her worth.

It’s 2020. And I’m jaded.

“So, what’s your process?” has GOT to be the silliest interview question for a writer. Today I finally answered honestly that there’s no formula for this. You either have it or you don’t. Talent and some amount of fairy dust is what makes it happen.
