Pros: Employer doesn’t have to pay you out for earned vacation when you leave and doesn’t have to carry that financial liability
Cons: For the employer, none
Company doesn’t have to pay unused PTO when you leave. Also depends on the company culture. I was with a software company a couple years ago and you could take like 5 weeks. They didnt really care as long as you were getting your work done. Had a friend working at an insurance company with “unlimited” and 3 weeks was the standard for employees.
Pro: sounds fabulous
Cons:
1) You can take time as long as someone can cover for you. (Depending on your team coverage can be challenging.)
2) No payout of unused time if you leave.
This was my experience with unlimited PTO at a former employer. We had a small team which made it difficult to take time off as it was subject to coverage. For me, I never felt like time off was earned. I learned from this experience I work better knowing my vacation balance to “budget” time off.
Pro: Sounds pretty to prospective employees
Con: It's not really unlimited. Historically I was taking 4-5 weeks per year including sick time off and just this year I put in for a little over 4 weeks and was told 3-4 weeks was standard when I was previously told 5 weeks since I had been there 5 years at the time.
