There's no investment on the firm's behalf for you to get a clearance at any level, so that would not prevent you from going commercial in the future.
ETA: That's not to say that they wouldn't want to keep you from moving to commercial, but that's just the same turf protection that you see in any type of attempted internal move.
There’s little career downside to getting a TS—you don’t HAVE to use it or put it on your resume.
On the personal side, the drawback is that with the new “continuous evaluation” process you can basically get dragged into the security office for scrutiny at any time. It happened to me—I was years away from expiration, but I got randomly selected for off-cycle review. Obviously that sucked and was stressful. Also, once you lose or get denied a clearance/upgrade/renewal, it’s extremely hard to get back. So don’t apply unless you’re completely sure you’ll pass and be able to keep it—no risky travel, no dating foreigners, etc.
If you get rejected for a TS you don't lose your secret necessarily, unless they uncover something bad. So I'd only be concerned if you have something to hide - and maybe you do.
A pro is a much less competitive pool of candidates for roles. This results in more money (especially for high clearances) and more opportunities to learn since clients are generally more lenient on job requirements if you’re cleared and can start right away.
⬆️ this is correct .. you’ll find that incompetence abounds .. people have the jobs merely due to the clearance not their skill set, expectations should be lowered and pace of client deliverables will probably slow down, albeit a lot of factors affecting that.
Have had a TS/SCI with Poly for 15 years. Literally 0 downside. Been in and out of commercial and cleared. You decide your path; whether or not it’s with the same firm is a different story.

First it’s the TS, then you’ll want the SCI, then you may want the CiP then if your really gung ho your go full FsP lol
ty everyone I started it
Definitely go for a TS. The upward movement with so much potential for huge pay is the biggest benefit. You’ll never struggle to find roles no matter the market conditions.
