@OP - Curious about motivations for the switch.
Had you always secretly wanted to be a copywriter and couldn’t get your foot in the door early enough and felt trapped in planning career path?...or did you eventually reach a breaking point where you were absolutely fed up and done planning and needed something more creatively fulfilling?
Good question - make them feel heard. (Applies to both sides)
Planners should always do a brief that involves the input of the creatives. As a planner, you need to make them feel like they have control in shaping the single value prop you have distilled for them. Make them give you the green light.
As a creative, know that it takes creativity to work with overarching strategies. So you must understand that is it not uncommon for a planner to feel creative when crafting strategic territories (aka creative briefs) for you to decide on. Make them feel like you acknowledge their strategic creativity and ask them for advice as you provide input to their brief/territories. This collaboration will scratch their itch and prevent them from interfering in the creative process down the line. Do remember to “check in” with them later as the idea starts to take form. It will show you care for efficacy. It will also take anxiety out of their head — bad planners who interfere with the creative process, often do so because the haven’t receive any updates and are insecure that their work might not be properly taken care of.

Your portfolio most likely shows creative executions, instead of creative thinking. Frame your creative exuctions from a strategic pov.
When adding your own strategy to your book: Show the challenge, the tension that you found that led you to the insight, and how that became a strategic idea. This idea should look like a 10-word headline. (Explicit, not witty).
If you want to be a strategist that’s more focused on content or digital, then you might need to expand on structure (channels, comms, digital mission, etc)
Make sure you frame your writing skills as an asset to agencies looking for a strategist that knows how to distill loads of info into one sentence. Strategy is about sacrificing a couple of good angles, to focus on the most important one. Like a cheetah focusing on one gazelle out of the pack.
Second option - meet w/ strategy director in your agency. Mention your interest. Ask them if you can shadow some of the briefs during the creation process. Discuss them during your routine meetings. Let them see your potential. When you see fit, have them vouch for you. Also have them recommend you on linkedin and make sure they specifically talk about your strategic thinking.
Third option - look into Julian Cole’s planning dirty academy or other strategy boot camps. They do help, and they are helpful at churning out spec pieces you can put on your portfolio.
