PSA: Please don't continually joke in a meeting that your OCD makes you do something. Those of us who are actually diagnosed with OCD and suffer from it every day do not find your joking the least bit funny.

Also whoever says that OCD is a disability needs to get a grip. No it's not. It can feel disabling and crippling yes but the solution is therapy and medication and commitment to behavioral change and thought modifications and those things are all plenty hard work but ultimately they can be achieved by the individual without needing any kind of "reasonable accommodation" at work.

A disability in the context of the workplace is something for which you need accommodation and understanding from your employer. Sight, hearing, mobility, etc.

Not about to pretend that my anxiety or OCD is a disability. It's insulting to people with actual disabilities.

Bold! D3, coming with the sh*t take that because they don’t personally agree with people who have degrees in the space and federal legislation that include OCD is a disability that it isn’t. K.

D3, you got any other universal wisdom to impart on all of us plebes? Apparently, it’s your world.

I would add, you can also have OCD and not have alignments and such be your obsession, so only someone who actually has that as their obsession should be saying it… and if they’re being vulnerable about it then that awesome, but for me I find my obsessions so embarrassing that only like 4 people know them at all. I would never joke that something that isn’t is my obsession/ compulsion though

Take it ease

I actually like it when people do this with my disability. It normalizes the condition and makes it easier to talk about.

Anyway, OP should chill. Nobody wins the oppression olympics.

So even though she apologized for offending you, did she say she doesnt actually have OCD? I have it and i “joke” the same way.

The take away here is OCD is an actual disability. It may not be physical, but it is still a disability. As part of your Diversity and Inclusion education, consider the ramifications of using someone's disability as a talking point for something taking longer if you do not actually possess said disability. If you are concerned that you may have OCD, talk to your doctor today.

What if they have it and never got it diagnosed? Can they not make a joke of it especially if it helps them as well?

I mention my own OCD or ADD all the time and I'm quite sure you should not be offended by this. I'm sorry if you are easily triggered but freedom from triggers is not a fundamental right.

I might suggest instead that you work on this with your therapist, ie, how to better resolve your own unwanted feelings. It's not everyone else's job to speak carefully to protect you from your own hangups.

I feel them same way when I hear people talk about their “anxiety.” Being nervous about being late to a call isn’t the same as having a panic attack or not being able to sleep for multiple nights. OCD, anxiety, depression are serious mental health issues. Don’t use them as some one liner joke.

I am not formally diagnosed but I have daily moments (1-3x a day) while working on deliverables in which the formatting has to be absolutely perfect and uniform or I’ll lose my mind

I’m more disappointed your junior didn’t tell you to pound sand and/or report you

Do you know for certain the person saying it doesn’t have OCD and that if it’s not the way they prefer bothers them endlessly?

What are we doing here, OP?

This might be a dumb question but do you add things like Junior League or Urban League to your LinkedIn/resume? I joined both organizations this year so I don’t have a leadership position or anything. But I’m wondering if it shows the community involvement/social aspect as well as serves as a general networking discussion point? Or is it cringe?
