PTO is not the solution to feeling burned out, especially if that feeling intensifies 10x when you return.

100% agree. I realized that taking time off (when feeling burnt out) meant I needed to do more work (on top of the work that was burning me out) to complete my handover while I was away, and this just didn’t make any sense. Also, despite the time spent creating handovers, when tended to happen was that 1) things would likely not be handled (creating more fires for me upon return) or 2) handled not well (also creating more work for me upon my return). Once I noticed a pattern, I quit.

Is it because the work piles on? I’m with you. I felt the firm-mandated shutdowns during July 4 and the end of the year helped more since everyone was out.

Quitting professional services, yes.

You need long term pto - like 5 or 6 weeks. Long enough that work can’t just wait around for you. And you need to completely disengage. Like let your work phone battery die and turn off the laptop.

like

Yep. And to add to this, you have to do something with your PTO. If you sit around watching Netflix all day, you will still feel burned out most likely. Even if you’re not travelling far, you can find local hikes / walls, try new food places, meet up with friends, write or do something creative etc etc. you’ll feel more accomplished which reduces the burnout.

Trying to figure out holidays with extended family. My husband and I have young kids on the east coast. His sister and her husband live on the opposite coast. We have lived in the same city as my in-laws for the last 10 years, so it always made sense for my sister-in-law to fly back here to visit. Now in-laws are in Chicago. Does it make sense to ask everyone to come to us for holidays given that we have young kids and limited vacation time? Is that fair?

Just got an email that my bonus would be docked by $50 per day per occurrence for not logging in my time entries to be equal to 7 hours. WTF. I hate this shit. Hi, so I’ve been working as a (TCP temporary creative professional) while one of the agency’s employees was on leave. I understood it to be a FT position, clocking in, etc but last week a bunch of employees were on vacation and I didn’t get projects. My work from the week before was all approved, so I had no edits. I asked for work, reached out, etc but ended up with very few billable hours, which annoyed the bosses. Now I’m not sure how to proceed. Do I NGAF, clock in? Or wait for work?

I’m currently in the early process of interviewing with Airbnb (base pay ~100k. Regular Analyst role) but just got an offer from an early stage startup (base pay ~120k. Manager role). They want me to decide by tomorrow but my hiring manager interview with Airbnb is Monday (interviewer wasnt available this week). What should I do? What would you consider when deciding between startup or an established company like Airbnb? (Both roles are fully remote, similar paid time offs policy)

I'll start - How much do benefits factor into your job search and deciding on an offer? For me, the vacation is critical, and it reflects the extent of the agency's culture of trust.

Just over a year post BL. Still a lawyer but more balanced. Still crazy to me how all those weird things about corporate BL are actually not inescapable realities of practice, e.g. not having free time on weekday evenings, work email notifications, having to take my laptop on vacation, caveating accepting a birthday party invitation by saying "if nothing comes up". The happiest surprise: work is still intellectually challenging because of the randomness of being an in-house generalist.

I accepted an offer 4 months ago at a tech company. I asked for a very low salary at the time since I didn’t know the market in such a niche sector (VR) and now im getting new potential offers every week on LinkedIn that pay 30-90% more than my current salary. None of those offers are official yet but I’m thinking if I should still ask for a salary increase in my current job, since I feel used for asking a low salary at the time. I haven’t performed yet because of the company structure though
