As a leader, I set the example by making sure I have a designated deputy who has full authority when I'm out and make sure that I truly disconnect when I'm on PTO. No checking my email, no check-ins with people, none of that.
In the 8 years I've been a manager or above, I can count on one hand the number of times I've had to hop on a call or do email while on PTO, and three of those times were all around a legitimate emergency due to a critical system going down with no failover and operations being severely impacted. Of note, those calls and meetings were all due to my deputy keeping me in the loop for when I got back, not that he was asking me for anything or that he was expecting me to do work.
I lay out and enforce those norms both upstream and downstream. Have a backup/deputy who's able to cover for you while you're out and actually disconnect when you're on PTO. I turn my phone and laptop off if I'm on PTO at home and don't take them with me if I'm traveling during PTO, and tell my team to do the same.
On projects at McKinsey there are no replacements, no backup, no one who can cover for you. That simply isn’t how the model works. Here the only time you can take PTO as an associate is when you are between projects. And as an EM or above, if you get a client email on PTO asking for a model urgently (that you worked on a year ago) it’s kind of only on you. And it happens a fair bit. Having said that I have been largely not disturbed on my PTO, but sometimes it’s unavoidable.

I’m pretty in favor of your point but I can certainly see scenarios where being on a call or responding to a critical email would be warranted. If it takes like ten minutes or less and makes everyone’s life easier is it really that big of a deal?
Yes it is.
It’s Pretend time off OP 🤣
As soon as someone ask you to do something you need to put in a cancellation for your PTO day so you can use it later or roll it over.
Well said OP. I think it’s a great time for me to paste this screenshot in
“You teach people how to treat you.”
Amen 👏🏽

What should I say when my client is working on her time off and so am I...?
If the client is burning then don’t take time off... if it isn’t then stop working on your time off.

PTO is Probably Time Off
P1 you never know what people have going on. In their life and many one disclose it. If someone is on PTO, you should respect it. It’s just a client. PTO could be a life or death matter.
I spend much of my time off at a spot with no internet provider and 0-1 bar of cell signal.
Yup
