Pulling an all-nighter tonight (23 hrs) after a whole week (last week too) of midnight/2am nights. Do I really need to go into work today or can I take a mental health day off? Do I need to ask?

Good for you. I don’t care about my job that much

likefunnysmart

Pwc1- yes, the client did request it. And with a bunch of metrics and a ppt deck to match. So it had to be done by this morning. Why would I stay up just for fun?!? Weird that you’d even consider that option 🤨

like

Yes ask. Any reasonable partner will give you the day off

I still don’t know why people pull all-nighters, I refuse to do so. I even tell the team before I’m staffed. Never had anyone say anything.

like

You pulled an all nighter.... for a tracker? Like, an Excel sheet with copypasta presumably from JIRA or coworkers' task tracking? Something your team could have automated or managed around earlier on without much hassle? And instead you sacrificed your health for this. OK. Take the day off. Take inventory of what matters. And then if your M and SM aren't aligned to that, find a new project. Sorry for being harsh, but I'd have seriously chewed you out for this. Even if you're awful at time management and avoided the task until the last minute there are better ways to handle the situation.

like

you should be able to (and you should!) can but definitely let people know first. A good manager will offer this to you unilaterally, but sometimes you have to force the convo. Hang in there! Also pulled a long night too #3am

like

Idk what level you are, but I probably wouldn't give you the day off. Why on earth would you stay up that late on something like a tracker (unless it's a deliverable that a client specifically requested be done today)? It sort of seems like you made the choice to not go to bed, apologies if I am missing reading the situation.

like

I mentioned this in another thread but y'all need to learn how to provide constructive pushback and visibility to the client or your management. "Hey can I get an update on the program status?" "Sure it's going well, everything is on track but we've got one thing that slipped because XYZ." "That's nice, but I need another one of those decks OP made so I can report out to my boss on Friday. Can you get me a draft tomorrow?" This is how this ALWAYS happens. And somebody just goes "doh! sure!"

like

No one else on the team stayed up. Just me pulling together a tracker with metrics because we absolutely needed it ASAP. Sigh 😔

like

Get some rest buddy. You’ve earned it .

like

Day off is unnecessary - sleep 4 hours and come in late (don’t ask - tell your manager) .... the whole day off would be for people who grew up on foam playgrounds...

like

P1 then I totally agree acceptable to request a recovery day! I interpreted your part about "just because we absolutely needed it" as you saw your team could badly use some sort of tracker internally and you took it on yourself to create one. You'd be surprised how many people in this industry heap imaginary pressure on themselves. But if it was a direct client ask with an explicit deadline then you had no choice and are totally warranted. If anything I wouldn't even ask, I'd just send the tracker to your lead and say "heres th le tracker, will probably be coming in late so I can catch a bit of sleep, feel free to call me if you need anything"

like

M2 has it right. Not saying OP did this, but I think sometimes we all make ourselves martyrs and then are surprised when no one gives af. Still learning this lesson myself.

like

OP, your team blows. I think that's your answer.

uplifting

Pwc1- why wouldn’t you give me the day off? Given that I stayed up working on an urgent deliverable? Doesn’t that seem a bit in-humane to let someone pull 36 hours straight? Especially given I’ve been working 12-16 hour days and weekends for the past few weeks. Besides, at some point I’d be a zombie and hardly effective Interested to hear your perspective

Actually sounds like you’re poor at managing your own time and workload. So effectively you’re asking “should Deloitte compensate me for being inefficient?” I think the answer to this is a no....

D2- ideally I wouldn’t either. And it was never formally requested. Just unreasonable expectations of the LOE it takes to have this out the next morning

Once in a blue moon maybe but your messages suggest this is something happening over the long term - and you don’t say it’s the team working like this, you only say it’s you working like this. The days of pulling all nighters and people being impressed are long gone. Now we have a much more sophisticated view of performance and impact - we’ve moving away from the machismo of working all night and into an area where we look for impact and a balanced lifestyle. So in the case of your situation - if you really had to pull an all night and no other options were available then talk to your project manager and raise this. However if you’re being a martyr to the Consulting cause needlessly then I’d simply suck it up and start working smarter....

So, I did that today and got a lecture on speed of deliverables not being fast enough, and how I need to be more flexible. There goes the scatterplot. Sigh 😔 How is it possible to do more than this? The whole team works till midnight most nights. This is crazy
