Pulse check - if trump raise the age limit to buy a gun, bans “bump stocks”, and tightens the law around background checks... will democrats or trump haters be happy? Or is confiscation the only way

M1 - I agree it’s subjective, but let’s be clear that restricting guns isn’t throwing out the second amendment. It’s changing the interpretation. For example (as a hypothetical): if the people of each state form a civilian-controlled militia, guns could be limited to militia membership without violation of the second amendment To OP’s question: I’ve never heard a reasonable politician promote confiscation, only buybacks, checks, and purchase restrictions. Buybacks have had success in other countries. Pence would likely dislike it though...he didn’t even like needle exchanges That said, we’ve also had some “good guy with a gun” scenarios this last year.

I fully support broad interpretations of individual rights, including the First, Second, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth amendments. That doesn’t mean all those rights are absolute. We make people get permits for parades and protests. We can do something similar for guns without allowing the government to take guns from law abiding citizens wily nily. I’ll also note that the surge in gun control support in the 60s to early 90s came about in (what you might say is a racist) reaction to mainly minorities possessing guns. There’s plenty of room for compromise.

Happier than before, yes. But it’s not enough. You don’t get to do the bare minimum and call mission accomplished.

like

That’s true, @M1. I’d call “American carnage” a better reason to heavily modify/qualify the second amendment.

No point debating with you - you seem to pick out individual situations and blowing it up to fit your argument. You still haven’t answered why you equate “draining the swamp” to fixing individual government branch efficiencies. I bet you will not, either. Take care. 👋🏽

like
Arrow Icon

Yes, K1. Draining the swamp will immediately make the government run perfectly with no cracks whatsoever. Are you familiar with how large even a “slim” government is? Do you understand how government works? Who am I kidding - you’ve been trolling on this for a few days

Fair enough. I've had good work done for my by Deloitte, Booz, Accenture, and even LEK. But I've never met a consultant from MBB that struck me as a total mess. I have from others.

M1 - do you think the militia is particularly well regulated?

like
Arrow Icon

Very subjective. I'd argue that regardless of whether we agree on how well regulated miltias are, that is not the sole basis for throwing out the second amendment

I like Trump’s proposal. But do not forget the majority of the mass-shooting involves government failures. The Texas shooter was in military jail for a jail. But the Air Force failed to pass the data to the National database. The FBI was tipped off by two different sources. A simple search to the to the background check database which is owned by FBI would reveal this guy owns a gun. Time to drain the swamp.

like
Arrow Icon

@K1: I don’t think “drain the swamp” means what you think it means. Unless you’re accusing a large swathe of law enforcement of being corrupt.

Hey, the bureaucracy is there to serve themselves, not the people. Democrats are essentially are representing them. Everything they do is to grab and maintain power.

Arrow Icon

Need to also be careful not to give FBI too much power to investigate citizens w/out cause, too. Wasn’t the Pulse club guy dismissed?

Arrow Icon

But you’re right @K1, a lot of the shootings do involve government failure. They have so little power to do anything to prevent shootings... I wonder if US states that don’t have mass shootings have any lessons we could learn 🤔
