Put on a new project that’s a complete mismatch. I do marketing strategy and they have me in back office IT. I don’t understand 99% of what people say. Help! Any survival tips?

Just remember the basic rule of consulting; appear knowledgeable, while googling whatever the client is talking about

They probably just needed the extra body. Just be willing to learn... They staffed you knowing you have no experience so experience is likely not so necessary... Just let your manager know that you feel you are out of your depth & but you are very willing to learn! Give it your all & try :)

The best projects I delivered on in my career were projects where I had no prior experience... I worked twice as hard because I felt I needed to ”catch up...” but soon enough I came up the curve and delivered well beyond expectations... It doesn't apply to everything but acknowledge what you don't know and work to close those gaps

Read up on the software(s) that are being used/implemented for a while, google a lot. Once you get a footing, utilize your internal network to ask questions. If you know someone who’s done this before, buy them some lunch or coffee and just ask questions, best practices, how they were able to learn to swim, so to speak. Most people I’ve met in the tech space that aren’t coders didn’t really have any prior knowledge.

Shake your head a lot like you know what they’re talking about, take notes furiously after they walk away and then Google what you can, what you can’t keep a running list of things you can ask your team.

Hello all Can someone please help me how to get an offer when we have 90 days notice period? As most of the consultancies are expecting only 30 days. I wanted to move out of tcs as I'm not much comfortable with the project and team. Expecting a suggestion from you all.

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Joined USI as an Analyst and I feel really depressed. My seniors are hell bent upon making it all the more difficult. I used to love my job once upon a time but nowadays I just dread the Monday morning and even more so the stand-up calls. On the top of all this my seniors/leads do not stop criticising my work and make me feel like a loser which has impacted my confidence. I sometimes break down alone in my room while working and feel very frustrated. Is this normal or am I just in a bad project?

Is there a good way to avoid signing up for new major responsibilities at current role if you’re actively job searching / interviewing? I feel like I’m close to an offer (in the next week) but my manager just added me as a sole resource to a new project. I feel like they’re counting on me and I would be screwing them over. Trying to balance being engaged at work while actively job searching. I like my team and don’t want to burn any bridges!

Are we allowed to print off federal computers? Just started working for a fed client. This isn’t PII information but is sensitive in the fact that it is essentially a grid which changes my password every time I log in. Their IT told me to print it but I don’t think they understood that I’m a remote sub. Leadership team is OOO and I have work to do so idk who I could even ask.

I don’t understand how some men doing well in their consulting jobs seem socially inept particularly when it comes to dating/relationships. I assume that someone with ‘client hands’ would know how to communicate with and handle a woman he likes. And I’m talking about fully grown men (30+).. Am I wrong to assume this?

What’s a good strategy to deal with freeloaders who are peers? For example, how to respond to their emails in which they assign task to other team members when that is his/her task? They make it sound that as if they are delegating fairly. That person has a less workload and the project director is not involved much. Any tips would be appreciated.

I am used to providing my client/PO with weekly status emails (CYA). However, this new client is telling me they’re not reading their emails and I should instead have weekly catch-ups with the BA? Will this impact my project review when the CAL goes to the PO for feedback/input? My goal with these emails was summarizing the tasks I have been doing over the week, so that the PO is aware of it.

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.
