Your guilt is temporary.
Your freedom is permanent.
Obviously they need to do more to retain associates. It's not your fault.
Wow A1, I want to get that tattooed now 😅
Not your problem. I was in a similar situation a few months ago: 1 of 2 associates left in our office after a boatload of ppl left. I gave my 2 weeks, wrapped up what I could and walked away. It’s been good.
On the flip side, the firm wouldn’t give 2 shits about letting you go if the bottom line called for it.
A - as you said. It’s their own fault.
Oh well. If they take it poorly remind them that this is an amazing growth opportunity for them to really build a broader skill set
Haha jeez, I’ll take the option on that 😂
If it helps. Just remember what many law firms did in 2000, 2001, 2008, and 2009. They laid off large swaths of their attorneys and staff with no notice and minimal comp. Some firms bit the bullet and admitted business was slow, but the best put out press releases claiming the layoffs were performance related (or for cause). Never trust a law firm for anything other than your next paycheck. Written by a former associate who survived the reaping, but never forgot.
Happened to me in 2008. Agree.
Wow. Let us know how it goes n
Haha sweet baby Jesus. Will do.
One of the best and worst things we do as lawyers is to see things from every other angle - except our own. When I am in your shoes (and actually I am right now) I always like to remember that if the situation were reversed, most employers would have my position filled before my dead body hit the ground.

This is just Stockholm Syndrome. Shake em off.
I was in your exact position where multiple ppl started giving notice a couple of days before me and I started getting super nervous and super guilty. My advice is be as selfish as you can - put yourself first and put on a layer of your most entitled self to get through it. Remind yourself at the end of the day your partners/boss/employer will function perfectly fine without you
My co was same. Set up a 3 week notice period with a plan to set them up for my departure. Told them all this when giving notice. Everything went fine. They came back a day later and told me to just go… okayyyy… So, I’ll say this. Do what’s right. Go in with a plan. What they do with that is their choice and a reflection of THEM not you. I’m now on a 3 week paid vacay! Yes, please!
Every single associate in my group is looking to leave. It happens.
Tangent: Also I don’t know why people get upset about being asked to leave immediately. You’re already leaving. You get some extra free time.
Exactly. Co-workers get swamped with your case load now? Sorry, that’s on management.
*Could not have come at a better time. If you stayed you’d have been absolutely crushed until they found a replacement for the other associate.
All these firms are going to have massive lay offs in 2023, make the most you can now
lol 🙄
ye blow zee bubble until it POPS!
then start again all over
So sorry I didn’t give an update right away. Have been getting my ducks in order.
It went well. They were professional and understood - it really meant a lot, especially given the attrition already. In a sense, it made me sad to leave, and at the very least, made the firm one I’d go back to.
This post was my most important one on this forum. With that, thank you all so much! All the advice made a world of difference.
Not your problem anymore. Congrats on the new job. Please update us on how the partners react!
Not your problem. Be polite. Be friendly. Offer to do whatever you can to ease the transition during the two week notice period.

I left at a time after a couple associates left shortly before me and we were drowning with work. I had a good relationship with my partner until I quit. She said some very rude, uncalled for, and unprofessional things to me. Glad I left
I think this is gonna be me. Any pointers? 🥺
Thanks so much everyone!
No good way to do it really. Rip the bandaid off and call it a day. Offer to serve your full notice without complaint and stay a bit longer if they ask you to provided that’s okay with your new employer.
I assume your old firm is not paying Cravath scale? Curious what’s going on with the attrition.
I would bail immediately upon finding out they were capping salaries. That is absurd.
