Putting in notice today at a very small firm that the owner wished for me to take over one day. It’s time, and it’s complicated, but according to former associates he’s acted completely unreasonable in response to associates leaving. Wish me luck.

Gave notice at my small (11 attorney) firm on Monday. Partner called me the firm's chosen one. Giving notice felt like kicking a puppy, but hopefully it was the right move. So, I understand and hope it went well!

Thank you, just got out of the meeting. Told him my plans for the firm when taking over, and that it felt more wrong to wait, holding him under a mistaken impression til he retired to do it, instead of leaving now. It’s a two attorney firm and I planned to make it fully remote and close the building.

That was a 90 minute meeting but hey 90 minutes to tear off a bandaid is better than waiting til never.

The best thing I did was tell him my mind Is made up, as it’s an offer I’d be a fool not to accept, and he can’t match it.

Associates should always do what is best for them. Partners should do what is best for the firm. If associates do not want to stay, partners should reevaluate what the firm has to offer. Many times senior partners assume that junior partners and associates should work to pay for the senior partners retirement because that is what the senior partners agreed to years ago. Times have changed and that structure is fading.

Could you please tell your review about Cognizant - Pros & Cons (what you feel)?

Okay ladies, advice very much appreciated.. I just had an interview where I was basically told (yes I was told) I’ve done “too many different things, and I have no focus” well after 13 years in Marketing I’d say doing “too many different things” I always thought was an asset. I’ve been an entire marketing Dept, I’ve been in digital marketing, I’ve run social media, I’ve done UX & web design. I’ve been in-house and agency. But to say I “lack focus” because I’ve been in the industry for awhile??!

Livid. Helped a friend with a small claims suit against a tow company that failed to provide them with all of the documentation/information as explicitly required by the vehicle code. And this violation explicitly allows statutory damages. Judge disregarded the law. Said that my friends weren’t really harmed by the tow company not giving that info. Disregarded statutory damages. Completely denied all claims. Insane. I’ve lost even more faith in our judicial system. Southern California by the way

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. He then gives my trial witnesses to another attorney, but is still going to make me do grunt work. Is he unreasonable or am I?

I am 38 and recently relocated to Charlotte, NC. Been practicing for 2 years with my own firm in CA and was hoping to join a firm in the estate planning/real estate space to get more familiar with the marketplace out here. Seems like firms in that space want someone with much more experience (3-5 years) or are not hiring. When would it be time to throw in the towel and start my own practice out here? Was hoping to join a firm where I could make a community out here but prospects look bleak.

Hi. I’m in need of advice and encouragement. I’m currently working as a public defender(2nd year) but I would love to pursue a solo private practice. I would like to leave the public defender because I am ready to make more money and I am no longer feeling the fulfillment I once felt. I have a family and work-life balance is a priority. What is a good way to gain experience in other areas of law as a solo practitioner? What areas of law are best for maintaining a work-life balance?

I am a first-year attorney in a 3 person firm (I’m the third). My bosses put me on the PD appointment list to ensure I have work but I absolutely dread court appearances and litigation. I wanted to be a transactional Atty. Over the last 2 weeks I’ve been living in a constant state of panic and (embarrassingly) cry in the bathroom at least once a day due to stress. I’m getting a therapist but am seriously considering leaving the firm with no backup. What do I do?

I’ve been at a small law firm for a year and eight months, and have been an attorney for one year. By small I mean, it’s me and another attorney (I’m the paralegal and law clerk as well). I don’t plan on sticking around, and am actively seeking new employment. Should I ask for a raise even though a raise wouldn’t make me stay? I’m in the San Diego area, I get paid $37 an hour, no benefits, but I get to work from home two days (I commute 104 miles total when I go into the office).

Finishing up my first year of big law, thinking of starting my own practice while I work at my current position. Thinking that in a few months, I’ll concretely work solely for my own practice full-time. How difficult is it to gain clients (mainly PI and civil lit)? My mentor also offered me to be an off counsel while I’m working at my current job so that I can refer cases for a cut, would there be an ethical issue? FYI my firm does unrelated law to PI and doesn’t forbid doing extra work.
