You have every right to move on and further your career. Don’t take his reaction personally. Do what’s best for you and your life.
Gave notice at my small (11 attorney) firm on Monday. Partner called me the firm's chosen one. Giving notice felt like kicking a puppy, but hopefully it was the right move. So, I understand and hope it went well!
Thank you, just got out of the meeting. Told him my plans for the firm when taking over, and that it felt more wrong to wait, holding him under a mistaken impression til he retired to do it, instead of leaving now. It’s a two attorney firm and I planned to make it fully remote and close the building.
That was a 90 minute meeting but hey 90 minutes to tear off a bandaid is better than waiting til never.
The best thing I did was tell him my mind Is made up, as it’s an offer I’d be a fool not to accept, and he can’t match it.
Associates should always do what is best for them. Partners should do what is best for the firm. If associates do not want to stay, partners should reevaluate what the firm has to offer. Many times senior partners assume that junior partners and associates should work to pay for the senior partners retirement because that is what the senior partners agreed to years ago. Times have changed and that structure is fading.
