Batting averages are insightful in the way they are collected because they are generally used to compare across baseball players playing in the same league. I used to pitch in high school; if I pitched to a bunch of MLB players today I’m sure they’d bat a thousand. How useful is it to measure that number? It’s meaningless. MLB players’ batting averages only matter when you look at at-bats against MLB pitchers.
